UNION COUNTY CHAMPIONS!!! - A Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs Roselle Catholic Game

2012 Union County Champions

The Cardinal Fanatic found this to be a very intriguing game where there was more to the victory than just statistical facts.  We will look over every statistical category and the Cardinal Fanatic will interject a non-factual observation. Lets get started first with each statistical category.

Where did the Cardinals win this game?

        Shooting Percentage (Advantage Plainfield) – Plainfield was able to be more efficient in their accuracy from the field.  Plainfield below the arc shot 50% compared to Roselle Catholic’s 47%; Plainfield 44% from beyond the arc compared to Roselle Catholic 31%.  A major key to the game was the foul shooting accuracy as Plainfield shot an impressive 82% compared to Roselle Catholic’s 60%.

        Turnovers (Advantage Roselle Catholic) – Roselle Catholic took care of the ball slightly better than the Cardinals.  Roselle Catholic committed 3 less turnovers than the Cardinals

        Interior Defense/Rejections (Advantage Plainfield) – It was a total team effort for the Cardinals to protect the interior paint.  The talented Jameel Warney and the 6’9” Tyler Roberson had it difficult in the paint area.  The Cardinals rejected 5 more shot attempts than Roselle Catholic.

        Sharing the Ball (Even) – Both teams distributed the ball well.  Both teams combined for 28 assists with Plainfield having a 2-assist advantage.

        Rebounds (Even) – Plainfield grabbed 4 more rebounds than the taller Roselle Catholic.

        3-Pointers made (Even) – Both teams connected on 4 3-pointers.

        Points in the Paint/Below the arc (Advantage Roselle Catholic) – Roselle Catholic converted 48 points in the paint area compared to the Cardinals 42 points.

        Free Throws (Advantage Plainfield) – This is where the game was won.  Plainfield converted 12 more free throws, which was a major advantage in a game that was evenly played.

        Additional Opinionated Interjection – Wesley Cherry shot the highest percentage from the field in the game.  Chris Gross was probably the best deep threat on the floor but was not utilized.  Credit should be given to the Cardinals overall team defensive effort as both players were defended well.  Cherry’s shot attempts were minimized from the off the ball defense of Jahmal Lane.  The same could be said for Chris Gross.  Gross, who scored 1,000+ points for his high school career, was also limited to shot attempts by the off the ball defense of Taylor Plummer.  This ultimately slowed down a potentially additional offensive firepower for Roselle Catholic.

Cardinal Fanatic Efficient 8

1) Plainfield – Senior Sekou Harris 6’0” {ER-28}
Sekou “Trey Swish” was brilliant as he shook off the Kean University shooting slump.  Sekou shot 63% below the arc, 50% from beyond the arc, and 100% from the free throw line to score a game high 26 points.  Trey Swish also grabbed 3 rebounds and dished out a game high tying 5 assists (Roselle Catholic’s Hakim Saintil also with 5 assists).

2) Roselle Catholic – Junior Tyler Roberson 6’9” {ER-23}
Tyler played his best game against the Cardinals.  Roberson showed the fans why is one of the most sought after underclassmen by Div 1 recruiters in the nation.  Roberson shot 57% from the field to score a team high 16 points.  Roberson completed a double double night by grabbing a game high 11 rebounds.  Tyler was not finish with his stat line as he dropped 3 assists and rejected 1 shot.

3) Roselle Catholic – Senior Jameel Warney 6’8” {ER-22}
The Plainfield resident dropped 15 points and just missed a double double by grabbing 9 rebounds.  Warney also picked up 2 steals, dropped off 2 assists, rejected a team high 2 shots.  Warney completed a very Efficient night by only committing 1 turnover.

4) Plainfield – Senior Justin Sears 6’8” {ER-21}
Sears battled admirably against the trees of Warney and Roberson.  Sears aka Dr. Double Double lived up to his title.  Sears scored 11 points and grabbed a team high 10 rebounds.  Dr. Double Double also picked up 1 steal, dropped off 2 assists and re-confirmed the Paint Department in all Sears has been shut down with his game high 4 rejections.

5) Roselle Catholic – Senior Wesley Cherry 6’5” {ER-20}
The big discussion in the stands was whether Cherry Sr. (Wesley’s Pops) was a better player back in the day at the 6:00 in the morning pick up games at Tamaques Park in Westfield or the Wesley Cherry Jr that was putting down 2 handed tomahawk slam dunks against my Cards!!! Well Pops, the Cardinal Fanatic is telling Father Cherry to take seat in my rocking chair next to me!  Wesley shot a blazing 83% from the floor.  Wesley also grabbed 4 rebounds, picked up 1 steal and dished out 2 assists. Another Cardinal Fanatic Efficiency measurement was the defensive effort of Wesley.  Wesley was able to slow down the hot shooting Harris.  If not for Cherry’s effort Harris may have scored 30+ points. Cherry completed a very Efficient night by committing only 1 turnover for the entire game.

6) Plainfield – Senior Jahmal Lane 6’4” {ER-19}
Jahmal’s effort earned him Star Ledger Player of the Week!  Jahmal shot an Efficient 64% from below the arc and 50% from beyond the arc to score 22 points.  Jahmal also picked up 1 steal, grabbed 5 rebounds, dished out 2 assists and rejected 2 shot attempts.

7) Plainfield – Senior Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan 6’6” {ER-16}
Dii’Jon shot 5 for 5 down the stretch from the free-throw line to hold off Roselle Catholic.  Dii’Jon would finish the game shooting 83% from the free throw line.  Dii’Jon also grabbed 6 rebounds, picked up 2 steals, dished out 3 assists, rejected 1 shot attempt, and only committed 1 turnover.  Mr. Mustard finished the game with a 3:1 assist to turnover ratio.

8) Plainfield – Senior Taylor Plummer 6’5” {ER-15}
Plummer was Efficient with his shooting as he shot 67% from the field.  But Plummer’s main contribution was not putting the ball in the bucket but the other things that does not get the glamour.  Plummer’s defensive effort in slowing down 6’7” sharp shooter Chris Gross was superb.  Taylor also grabbed 4 rebounds, picked up a game high tying 3 steals (Roselle Catholic’s Hakim Saintil also with 3 steals), dropped off 2 assists and rejected 1 shot attempt.

A Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs Elizabeth Game

Where did the Cardinals win this game?

        Taking Care of the Rock/Defense (Advantage Elizabeth) – Elizabeth committed 7 turnovers while the Cardinals committed 18.  This gave the Minutemen 11 extra possessions and a possible 22 extra points.  If Elizabeth took advantage of this statistic, the outcome could have been different.

        Rejections (Advantage Plainfield) – The Cardinals basically erased their mishandling of the rock by rejecting 12 shots or a potential 24 points.  Elizabeth rejected 2 shots.  Denzel Christian helped the Cardinals in the rejection category by having 2 block shots.

        Sharing the Ball (Even) – Both teams dished out 6 assists

        Rebounds (Advantage Plainfield) – This was a big advantage.  Plainfield out rebounded the Minutemen by 30 rebounds.  The Cardinals grabbed a season high 58 rebounds.  Jahmal Lane contributed from his guard position by grabbing 7 rebounds.

        2 points made (Advantage Plainfield) – Plainfield outscored Elizabeth by 18 points below the arc. Jahmal Lane converted 7 field goals below the arc.

        3-Pointers made (Advantage Elizabeth) – Elizabeth erased the Cardinals point advantage below the arc by outscoring the Cardinals from above the arc by 18 points thus making the game a dead heat.

        Free Throws (Advantage Plainfield) – The Cardinals shot a whopping 54 free throws and was able to convert on 20 more free throws than Elizabeth.  Thus our point differential of the game. Sekou Harris shot 75% from the free throw line to score 9 points from the charity line.

Cardinal Fanatic Efficient 5

1) Plainfield – Senior Justin Sears 6’8” {ER-40}
Justin reached the rear Efficiency Rating plateau of the 40+ club where only one other high school baller has reached (Kyrie Irving – St. Patrick/Duke/Cleveland Cavaliers).  Justin shot 56% from the floor and connected on 11 free throws to score a game high 31 points.  Sears reaffirmed his Dr. Double Double credentials by grabbing a game high 18 rebounds.  Justin also picked up 1 steal and rejected 3 shots.

2) Elizabeth – Junior Isaiah Johnson 6’3” {ER-22}
Isaiah was on fire!  Johnson shot 67% below the arc, 60% from beyond the arc and 100% from the free throw line to score a team high 21 points.  Johnson also grabbed 3 rebounds and only committed 1 turnover for the entire game.

3) Elizabeth – Senior Isaiah Davis 6’4” {ER-21}

Plainfield Basketball Future - A Fanatic Summation

Who's returning...

With the season winding down, many are saying that Plainfield Basketball will be down next year. With 95% of multi year varsity players graduating this year, the outlook of the future does not seem bright. 6’6” Denzel Christian will be the veteran of the team entering his 4th year of varsity play next year.  Sharp shooter Denzel Johnson will be teaming up with Christian as the only returning varsity players with major game time.  6’5” reserve sophomore Andrew Jordan  and 6'2" reserve sophomore Christian Cook will be also looked upon to help nurture the future youthful Cardinals.

Plainfield Cardinal Junior Varsity

But as the Cardinal Fanatic was watching the Junior Varsity and Freshman play my beak started to expand in amazement at the talent our youngsters have. The leaping ability of Jordan Sears and Walt Monroe Jr., the accurate foul shooting and 3-point accuracy of Najee Lucky, the lock down defense of Steven Jones, and the penetrating drives of Terrill Lockley were some of the up and coming Junior Varsity players we may see next year.  The JV Cardinals started off the season slow but started to jell as the season progressed.  The JV Cardinals made a run during the JV Union County tournament only to lose in the semi-finals in a nail biter to Elizabeth by 3 points.

 Here is a little insight of some of our Junior Varsity Cardinals

JV Interview Part 2

Plainfield Cardinal Freshmen

The Freshman team nearly completed a perfect season with their only defeat coming at the hands of St. Anthony’s of Jersey City.  The Freshman Cardinals entered the Cougar Classic Freshman Tournament as the favorites and did not disappointment the Cardinal Fanatic.  The Freshmen Cardinals battled a talented Union Catholic team in the finals who only suffered one loss this season.  You guessed it; Union Catholic’s loss was to Plainfield.

Plainfield native Serge Gilbert led the game in scoring for Union Catholic with 16 points but the Freshmen Cardinals were too deep.

Sekou look alike, Kyle Wider led the Cardinals with 12 points and Zaichair Wilson dropped 10 points to lead the Cardinals in scoring.  Daniel Andrews grabbed 8 rebounds from his guard/small forward position while 6’8” Ahmad Baker led the game with 9 rebounds and 5 rejections.  But the early play of Jaquise Wilson kept the Cards in the game.  With 6’4” guard Jachal Simmons forced to watch the game from the bench in foul trouble, Wilson stepped up and scored 6 points in the 2nd period on 3 of 5 shooting to help the Cardinals overcome an early 7-point deficit.  The Cardinals would take the lead on the play of Jaquise and never look back to win 49-39 and be crowned The Cougar Tournament Champions.  Jacquise Wilson would earn tournament MVP.

A Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs Scotch Plains-Fanwood Game

Where did the Cardinals win this game?

        Points in the Paint – Plainfield scored 50 points below the arc on 60% shooting while Scotch Plains-Fanwood scored 24 points on 35% shooting. Denzel Christian, Taylor Plummer and sophomore Christian Cook all contributed with their pull up jumpers to help the Cardinals in this category.

        Rebounds – Plainfield used their height advantage to control the glass.  The Cardinals grabbed 37 rebounds to Scotch Plains-Fanwood 13.  It was great to see that 6’6” junior Denzel Christian is getting his legs back after sitting most of the season with an injury.  Denzel grabbed 7 rebounds to help the Cardinals on the glass.

        Sharing the Ball – One of the hardest things to do is stop a team that shares the ball.  The un-selfish Cardinals dropped off 12 assists compared to the Raiders 4. Denzel Christian and Taylor Plummer contributed with their ball distribution.

        Defense – The Block Party continues.  The Cardinals rejected 12 shot attempts to control the paint on the defensive side of the ball.  Denzel Christian re-certified is Block Party Crew membership along with Taylor Plummer.

Cardinal Fanatic Efficient 5

1) Plainfield – Senior Jahmal Lane 6’4” {ER-28}
Jahmal continues his Efficient play in his 4th year of varsity action.  Lane shot 60% below the arc, perfect from beyond the arc and was perfect from the foul line to score a game high 17 points.  For the second consecutive game, Lane just missed earning a double double.  Lane grabbed a game high 9 rebounds.  Lane also had a game high tying 2 steals (Plainfield Sekou Harris and Scotch Plains-Fanwood Anthony Byers and Tomas Bonacum also with 2 steals), and the longest tenure member of the “Block Party Crew” rejected 3 shots.  Lane completed a very Efficient night by only committing 1 turnover for the entire game.

2) Plainfield – Senior Justin Sears 6’8” {ER-20}
Sears Inc. has achieved elite status and has now been promoted to the Board of Directors in Plainfield Basketball History.  Sears dropped his 1,000+ points to be the 11th player to join the exclusive club*.  Regarded by some as one of the most dominant big man to play in a Cardinal uniform, his statistical performances cannot be disputed.  One of the top rebounder, rejecter and intimidator in the state, Sears has balanced academics to achieve Ivy League status that may even be more impressive than what he has done on the basketball courts.  The future Businessman demonstrated how he has cornered the paint industry.  Sears shot at a 50% clip to score 13 points down low, grabbed 8 rebounds, dropped off 3 assists and rejected a game high 4 shot attempts. Sears committed 2 turnovers to complete a historic Efficient night.

3) Plainfield – Senior Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan 6’6” {ER-19}
Dii’Jon “Rim Rattler” Allen-Jordan continues his assault on the rim.  Dr. Dunkadelic continues his high percentage shot attempts by shooting 83% from the floor to score 10 points. Allen-Jordan grabbed 6 rebounds, distributed 1 assist and rejected 3 shot attempts.  Mr. Mustard completed a very Efficient night by only committing 1 turnover.

4) Plainfield – Senior Sekou Harris 6’0” {ER-17}

5) Scotch Plains-Fanwood – Junior Ian Johnston 5’0” {ER-8}
Ian connected on 2 3-pointers and was perfect from the foul line to score a team high 14 points. Ian also grabbed 2 rebounds and picked up 1 steal.  Ian completed an Efficient night by committing only 2 turnovers.

A little note: In his first varsity game in 2009 Sears earned a Efficiency Rating of 18 and scored his first varsity points against Scotch Plains-Fanwood.

A Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs Gill St Bernard Game

Where did the Cardinals win this game?

In arguably the most exciting game of the year in New Jersey, multiple players on both teams put on an exhibition for the ages.  Normally the Cardinal Fanatic gives out the top 5 players of the game but this game was an exception.  Only naming 5 players would do an injustice to the overall team performance of both Plainfield and Gill St. Bernard’s.

But how in the world did the Cardinals pull out the victory with defeat on their door steps twice (down 5 with a minute in regulation and down 5 with a minute in overtime) was just an amazing display of the refuse to lose mentality of veteran Cardinals.

Here is a detail comparison of the statistical categories and you decide where this game was won for the Cardinals!

We will start with the stats that affect the opportunities to score.

        Personal Fouls – (Advantage Plainfield) - Gill St. Bernard’s committed 18 personal fouls to the Cardinals 13.  Larry Piretra earned the unofficial title of the “Mad Hacker” as his aggressive defense was too much for the ref’s to let go by.  Although Piretra’s defense helped in keeping Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan to a total of 8 points at the point of Piretra fouling out.  Piretra committed his 5th foul at the 1:51 mark of regulation. Allen-Jordan would score 8 points and grab 4 rebound from that point on shooting at a 63% clip, which included Allen-Jordan converting the winning field goal.

        Turnovers – (Even) – Plainfield turned the ball over 11 times to Gill St. Bernard’s 10.  The timing of the turnovers was critical.  Gill St. Bernard’s turned the ball over once in the last minute of regulation and twice in the last minute of overtime.

        Rejections – (Even) – Plainfield rejected 7 shots while Gill rejected 6.  No true advantage in this statistical category.

        Assists – (Even) – Gill St. Bernard’s accurate shooting from deep off the motion offense high screen helped the Knights get 13 assists for the game.  Plainfield was not to far behind as the Cardinals dished out 11 dimes.

        Steals – (Even) – Plainfield picked up 6 steals while Gill picked up 4 steals.  The timing of the Plainfield steals was critical as 2 of them came down the final minute of regulation and overtime.

        Rebounds – (Advantage Plainfield) – Plainfield dominated this category as Allen-Jordan, Sears and Lane combined for 38 of the Cardinals 46 rebounds.  Dominic Hoffman battled like a warrior against the Cardinals as Hoffman led his team to grab a total of 26 rebounds.  Hoffman was responsible for 50% of his team’s boards.

        2 Points made – (Advantage Plainfield) – The Cardinals took a whopping 47 two-point attempts connecting at a 55% clip.  Plainfield scored 60 points below the arc while Gill St. Bernard’s scored 26 points at a 41% clip.  This gave the Cardinals a 34-point advantage in points in the paint/below the arc.

        3 Points made – (Advantage Gill St. Bernard) – The Knights pretty much wiped away the Cardinals point advantage with a clinic from beyond the arc.  The Knights scored a whopping 42 points from behind the 3-point at a blazing 56% clip. The Cardinals scored on 1 field goal from behind the arc.  This gave the Knights a 39-point advantage in the 3-point category.  This also gives the Knights an overall score advantage of 5 points.  So where did the Cardinals win this game?

        Free Throws! – (Advantage Plainfield) – The early personal fouls (see the top of the list on personal fouls) gave the Cardinals opportunities to score from the free bee line.  The Cards connected on 15 free throws with near perfect shooting in the hostile territory of the Gill St. Bernard’s student section.  Gill St. Bernard’s blazing outside shooting may have been a blessing to the Cardinals in disguise as the Knights lack of attempts in the paint gave them only 14 attempts from the foul line.  Although the Knights shot a luke warm 75% from the charity line to connect on 9 points, the accurate shooting team from Peapack-Gladstone failed to take advantage of their very accurate foul shooting ability.  With the Cardinals scoring more points from the foul line than Gill St. Bernard’s even attempted, the Cardinals gained a 6 point advantage and the difference in the game of 1 point.

Cardinal Fanatic Efficient 10

1) Plainfield – Senior Justin Sears 6’8” {ER-32}
Dr. Double Double answered the call as he came up big from the free throw line.  Sears shot 85% from the free throw to help him score 15 points for the game.  Sears was able to complete his double double performance by grabbing 14 rebounds.  Justin also had 1 steal, a team high tying 3 assists (Sekou Harris and Taylor Plummer also with 3 assists) and a game high 4 rejections.  Sears committed only 2 turnovers to earn the Cardinal Fanatic Efficient Player of the Game.

2) Gill St. Bernard – Senior Alex Mitola 5’11” {ER-29}
It’s interesting that the top two Efficiency performers played round 1 today against each other.  The Dartmouth bound Mitola will be battling against Yale bound Justin Sears at the next level in the Ivy League next season.  Alex “Radar” Mitola was near perfect from well beyond the 3-point arc.  Mitola shot an eye popping 89% (8 for 9) from deep and shot 80% from the free throw line to score a game high 30 points.  Mitola also earned the Prime Time Player MVP Award.

3) Plainfield – Senior Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan 6’6” {ER-27}
Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan is becoming to be known as Mr. BB (Buzzer Beater) as he put a little Mustard on his last second shot in over time to pull out the improbable 1-point victory for the Cardinals.  Allen-Jordan earned a double double performance by shooting 54% from the field to score 16 points and by grabbing a game high 16 rebounds.  Mr. Buzzer Beater completed an Efficient night by committing only 1 turnover.

4) Gill St. Bernard – Senior Dominic Hoffman 6’7” {ER-26}
The Bucknell bound Hoffman earned the 3rd double double performance of the game.  Hoffman was perfect from the foul line to help him score 12 points to go along with his team high 13 rebounds.  Hoffman also dropped off 2 assists, picked up a steal and rejected a team high 3 shots.

5) Plainfield – Senior Jahmal Lane 6’4” {ER-23}

Sekou “Trey Swish” Harris “open court play is one of the best in the State of New Jersey,” commented NJ.Com.  His open court pull up jumper sent the game to overtime.  Harris shot 56% from below the arc and shot 100% from the free throw line to score 20 points and be the 4th Cardinal to score in double figures.  Sekou also picked up 2 steals and dished out 3 assists.  Harris completed an Efficient night from his point guard position by only committing 2 turnovers.  Sekou was named the Prime Time Player MVP.

7) Gill St. Bernard – Senior Larry Piretra 6’5” {ER-15}
Piretra defensive effort was critical in this game but Larry also displayed his offensive shooting touch by shooting a perfect 2 for 2 from beyond the 3 point line.  Larry also grabbed 4 rebounds, dropped off 1 assist and rejected 1 shot.  Piretra completed an excellent Efficient night by committing 0 turnovers for the entire game.

8) Gill St. Bernard – Junior Jaren Sina 6’3” {ER-13}
Jaren Sina is one of the most highly sought after guards in New Jersey for Division 1 Colleges.  The ACC, Big East, Atlantic 10, and the SEC have schools that are actively recruiting the talented point guard.  As a sophomore Sina gave a verbal to Alabama but with the interest of so many schools his search has re-opened.  Sina connected on 3 treys to help him score 22 points for the game.  Sina also displayed why he is being sought after at the point position by obtaining a 4-1 assist to turnover ratio in a very aggressive game.  Sina dropped off a game high 8 assists and picked up 2 steals.  Sina only committed 2 turnovers for the entire game.

9) Plainfield – Senior Taylor Plummer 6’5” {ER-8}

A Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs St. Anthony’s Game

Where did the Cardinals loose this game?

        Field Goals Made – Amazingly the shooting difference in field goals was nearly the same from the floor.  Plainfield actually shot a higher percentage below the arc.  Plainfield shot 39% below the arc while St. Anthony’s shot 35%.  The accuracy from deep went to St. Anthony’s as they shot 43% from the three while the Cardinals shot a dismal 17%.  Although the shots from deep were not falling, the Cardinals converted 2 shots from deep while St. Anthony’s converted 3.  Total point advantage from the field went to St. Anthony.  St. Anthony’s scored 7 more points from the field.

        Free Throws – St. Anthony’s gained the advantage in this category.  The Friars converted 10 free throws compared to the Cardinals 5.  Thus the final score difference of 12 points.

        Rebounding – When the Cardinals have the advantage in this category, they win 99% of their games.  St. Anthony’s interior physical box outs and length helped the Friars control the glass.  St. Anthony’s out rebounded the Cardinals 31-24.  Looking at the glass half full, the Plainfield guards out rebounded the Friars guards.  This effort from Sekou Harris and Jahmal Lane (11 rebounds combined) will be needed against the bruising Knights of Gill St. Bernard’s.

        Defensive Effort – Let’s face it, Coach Hurley is in the Hall of Fame for a reason.  He knows how to work the ref’s, he knows his team strengths, and most importantly he knows his opponents strengths.  It also helps to be able to pick some of the best Bball talents in a 4 state vicinity and beyond if necessary.  St. Anthony’s strategy was to slow the game down and play a half court game.  The Friars did just that for 24 of 32 minutes.  Kyle Anderson was the admiral of this ship that kept the pace to the Friar’s liking.  But this could not have been done without the rebounding advantage, the 9 steals, and the 5 rejections.  This effort actually turned away 14 possessions or at the most 28 points!  If the Cardinals converted half of those possessions, yes you guessed it; Plainfield would have had the advantage of the game by 2 points.  But that’s why some ratings have St. Anthony’s as high as #1 in the Nation.  They make teams play their game.  Again, looking at the glass half full, the Cardinals played exceptional in the 3rd period.  Holding St. Anthony’s to 1 of 12 shooting from the floor with their only field goal at the buzzer on an offensive rebound put back.  The Cardinals were able to get the deficit down to 2 points during this session.

Cardinal Fanatic Efficient 5

1) St. Anthony’s – Senior Jerome Frink 6’6” {ER-19}
Kyle may be the star on this team but the heart of the Friars is Jerome Frink.  The 6’6” bruiser does all the dirty work that is not publish in the glamour magazines.  His bruising picks and box outs are of professional athletes.  His strength is above most college players, and most importantly he leads by example.  Frink scored 7 points but it was his non-statistical efforts that earned him Cardinal Fanatic Efficient Player of the Game.  Frink grabbed a game high 11 rebounds, picked up a game high 2 steals (Plainfield’s Taylor Plummer and St. Anthony’s Kyle Anderson, Halice Cooke and Josh Brown also with 2 steals), team high tying 2 assists (St. Anthony’s Tariq Carey also with 2 assists) and 1 rejection.  But what separated Frink from the rest is the immeasurable defensive effort.  Frink forced multiple missed attempts, influenced many turnovers, denied several sets by disrupting pick plays, and took multiple charges.  Frink is a JC WARRIOR!

2) St. Anthony’s – Senior Kyle Anderson 6’9” {ER-16}
Foots, you have schooled your son well!  The Hollywood bound Anderson will be an immediate star at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).  Anderson is showing glimpses of another 6’9” guard that played in Los Angeles but we will hold of on stamping those praises.  Anderson controls the entire floor and has an extremely high basketball IQ.  The 6’9” frame and the ability to handle the ball like a guard are rare in the State of NJ.  OK, enough of praising arch enemy #1. Kyle scored a game high 14 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, picked up a game high tying 2 steals, and rejected a game high 2 shots.  Anderson also controlled the Friar’s possessions very well by only committing 2 turnovers.  His floor generalship is another immeasurable characteristic that guided the Friars to victory.

3) St. Anthony’s – Junior Halice Cooke 6’2” {ER-15}
Halice was “Cooking” from deep.  Halice converted a game high 3 3-pointers.  Each 3-pointer made was like a samurai sword piercing the heart of a Cardinal. Btw, would not have been open if it was not for those bruising picks by Mr. Frink and company. Cook took advantage of his open looks by shooting 50% from below the arc and 43% from beyond the arc to score 13 points for the game.  Cooke also grabbed 3 rebounds and picked up a game high tying 2 steals.

4) Plainfield – Senior Justin Sears 6’8” {ER-15}
Justin prevented an opponent’s sweep in the Cardinal Fanatic Efficiency Ratings (ER).  Playing at a maximum 70% (sprained ankle 24 hours earlier) would take away one of the highest leapers in the state ability to control the glass.  But the injury report did not slow down Sears.  Justin shot 71% from the field to score a team high 10 points.  Sears also grabbed a team high 8 rebounds, picked up 1 steal, and rejected 1 shot.

5) St. Anthony’s – Junior Josh Brown 6’4” {ER-9}
The floor guidance of the Friar’s point guard alleviated the defensive effort on Kyle Anderson.  Brown grabbed 5 rebounds, picked up a game high tying 2 steals, and rejected 1 shot.  The point guard only committed 2 turnovers for the entire game.
