All Gee-Gee Brown Tournament – First Team

All Gee-Gee Brown Tournament – First Team

The Best of the rest

1)      County Line – Semaj Inge
The one time Temple Owl was the one consistent talent on a very talented Country Line team.  Semaj, who has played professionally over seas, scored the most points in total in the tournament and was consistently one of the top players in every game played.  His base line windmill slam-dunk was spectacular.  Semaj scored a record total tournament high 87 points for the tournament breaking last years first team member Chris Martin of the Blazin Bums 82 points. Semaj also had the 2nd highest total of rejections and the 2nd highest total of steals for the entire tournament

2)      Team A-Game – Justin Sears
Arguably the best performance by a teen-ager in the Gee-Gee Brown tournament.  Sears’s stat line across the board was impressive and even more impressive since it was against former Division 1 and professional players.  Sears had a tournament high 9 rejections that is only 2nd all time to Adrian Gilliard from Porterplus Realty record 11 rejections in the 2011 Gee Gee Brown Tournament.  Justin also had the 2nd most rebounds, 4th most steals and 4th most total points for the entire tournament.

3)      Bada Bing – Mike Gordon
Mike was last year’s most efficient player in the Gee-Gee Brown Tournament.  The one-time first team All-State player gave an outstanding performance against Country Line in defeat.  Mike broke his own Gee Gee Brown Tournament record of steals, scored the 2nd highest amount of points for the entire Tournament, and had the 4th highest total in assists.

4)      County Line – Antoine Morgano
Antoine Morgano did all the dirty interior work for County Line.  A former Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League player of the week showed why he was deserving of that award in the Gee-Gee Brown Tournament. Antoine had the 3rd highest amount of field goals made in the paint, 8th  most points scored, shot 66% from the field and had the 5th most rebounds of the tournament.

5)      Rush Hour – Rodney Tucker
Arguably the most improve player of the Gee-Gee Brown Tournament from last year to this year.  Tucker was the MVP of Rush Hour.  His cramping injury in overtime was the difference for County Line to win the tournament.  Rodney dominated the boards and out rebounded everyone in the tournament by 12 rebounds.  Tucker was able to break a Gee Gee Brown Tournament record for total rebounds, which was set last year by Capital City All-Stars #7 Robert 34 rebounds.  Tucker grabbed a record 37 rebounds.  Tucker also had the 5th most rejections and the 3rd highest free throw percentage in the tournament.

BATTLE OF THE BACK COURT - ROUND 5

Battle of the Back Court – 12th  Match Up Round 5 (Final Round)

Rush Hour – Andre Dabney
Rush Hour – Anthony Nelson
Rush Hour – Jerrel Thompson

Rush Hour’s Andre Dabney needed a similar great performance as he did against Country Line in the 1st game to have a chance of being crowned King of the Back Court.  Anthony Nelson would have to put on a game of the ages and Jerrel arrived too late to have a chance although his previous performance helped Rush Hour hand Bada Bing their first defeat in 2 years at the Gee-Gee Brown Tournament.

This was a great game.  Country Line was giving it to Rush Hour but the tri factor back court of Nelson, Dabney and Thompson brought their team from sure defeat to send the game into overtime.  Country Line learned from last year as their bench was too deep and fresh.  Country Line would pull away in overtime to avenge their only defeat in the Gee-Gee Brown Tournament and walk away with the crown.

All three guards gave a solid performance.  Nelson would be the team’s high scorer with 16 points.  Jerrel gave a 4:1 assist to turnover ratio but Dabney gave a complete balance effort and the elder statesmen got the edge in the final match up of the Battle of the Back Court.

BATTLE OF BACK COURT - ROUND 4

Battle of the Back Court – 10th Match Up Round 4

Team A-Game – Tyrone Johnson
Team A-Game – Mike Price
Team A-Game – Anthony Baskerville

Team A-Game ran into a Country Line that is on a roll.  Price and Baskerville did not have any answers for the talented backcourt of Country Line.  Although Team A-Game kept it close but Country Line had too much size and fresh legs to contend with.

Tyrone turned in a solid performance and did not play the final period.  Johnson would continue his feeding of Justin Sears who finished as the game high scorer.  Johnson would end his day after the 3rd period with a 4:1 assist to turnover ratio.

Country Line sends Team A-Game Tyrone Johnson, Mike Price, and Anthony Baskerville home.

Game 10 advantage goes to Tyrone Johnson

Battle of the Back Court – 11th  Match Up Round 4

Bada Bing – Mike Gordon

Bada Bing came up 1 shot short as Country Line continued their elimination rant against the local teams.

Mike Gordon did not take it lying down as he took it too the multiple talented guards of Country Line.  After the knock down artists of Eric Magazine and Greg Fowler could not find their usual pinpoint shot, Gordon put Bada Bing on his back.  Mike would hit shots from 30+ feet, then come down to hit a Michael Jordan like fade a ways off the glass, or just simply take it to the rim blowing away the guards of Country Line.  But it was not enough as the team from Philly ended Bada Bing and Mike Gordon’s reign.

Mike showed why he should be crowned King but all he can do now is watch the final game and see if his performance was good enough.

Country Line sends Bada Bing’s Mike and Derrick Gordon home.

BATTLE OF THE BACK COURT - ROUND 3

Battle of the Back Court – 7th Match Up Round 3

3z PleaZe – Sekou Harris
3z PleaZe – Allen Brown

No head to head match up in this contest but 3z PleaZe had to contend with the very talented Country Line back court led by former Pitt Panther Tony Tate.  Sekou Harris and Allen Brown had their hands full as Country Line built an early double digit lead.  But as usual the Cardiac Cardinals brought out their defibrillator to make a remarkable come back.  But the veteran play of several former Div 1 players against fresh out of High School players was enough for Country Line to hold off a furious come back.

Allen Brown had his hands full with the hot shooting Tony Tate.  Sekou was defended well.  Harris used his quickness to penetrate at will but the triple towers of Country Line altered Harris’s shot attempts.

Country Line sends 3z PleaZe’s Sekou Harris and Allen Brown home.

Game 7 advantage goes to Sekou Harris
Team high 12-points

Battle of the Back Court – 8th Match Up Round 3

Team A-Game – Tyrone Johnson
Team A-Game – Anthony Baskerville
Team A-Game – Mike Price

No head to head match up in this contest.  Tyrone Johnson command of the floor helped Team A-Game eliminate last years runner up, Blazin Bums.  Johnson controlled the floor well and set up plays for his former team mate, Justin Sears.  Sears would be the high scorer of the game but Johnson’s play was directly responsible.  Anthony Baskerville and Mike Price did not get into any rhythm and was not able to gain the advantage of the better back court player.

Game 8 advantage goes to Tyrone Johnson

Battle of the Back Court – 9th Match Up Round 3

Rush Hour – Jerrel Thompson
Rush Hour – Anthony Nelson
Bada Bing – Mike Gordon
Rush Hour – Andre Dabney

In the head to head match up of the Battle of the Back Court, Bada Bing suffered a set back with the absence of the leader of Round 1 Derrick Gordon.  Rush Hour got an added plus with the addition of former 1,000 point scorer Jerrel Thompson.  Mike Gordon had a tougher challenge as Nelson, Thompson, and Dabney gave Bada Bing a three headed attack.  Anthony Nelson would end up as the game high scorer while Mike Gordon would lead his team in scoring but would suffer his first defeat in 2 years in the Gee-Gee Brown Tournament.

Although Nelson would drop a game high 19 points, it was the all around play of Jerrel Thompson who got the Cardinal Fanatic vote for the top guard in this match up.  Jerrel would score in double digits with his efficient scoring and also took care of the ball well by committing only 1 turnover for the game.  Thompson would finish the game with a respective 4:1 assist to turnover ratio.

Game 9 advantage goes to Jerrel Thompson

BATTLE OF THE BACK COURT - ROUND 2...

Battle of the Back Court – 4th Match Up Round 2

3Z PleaZe – Sekou Harris
3Z PleaZe – Allen Brown
South Side – Antoine Patterson

With elimination facing the loser, it was expected to see a heated game.  It was also expected to see Antoine Patterson pick up his game against the younger backcourt of Sekou Harris and Allen Brown.  Brown’s defensive efforts seem to have ensured that Patterson would not have one of his lights out performances.  With Brown’s focus on defense, this left it up to Harris to carry the floor leadership.  Harris was near perfect from the floor although he took minimal shots.  Sekou’s balance effort ended Antoine Patterson’s and South Side visit to the Gee Gee Brown Tournament.

Edge goes to Sekou Harris as Allen Brown’s defensive effort slowing down the explosive Antoine Patterson gave Brown runner up in this Battle of the Back Court match up.

Game 4 advantage goes to Sekou Harris

Battle of the Back Court – 5th Match Up Round 2

Bada Bing – Mike Gordon
Bada Bing – Derrick Gordon
Team A-Game – Mike Price
Team A-Game – Anthony Baskerville
Team A-Game – Tyrone Johnson

One of the most intriguing Battle of the Back Court match ups was in the game with defending champions Bada Bing and Team A-Game.  Between the 2 teams there were three 1st Team All-Staters and three Union County Player's of Year.  Mike Gordon seem to let the fan’s know that he may be one of the elder states men but was not ready to hand over the reign to his younger brother or the younger guards from Team-A.  Derrick Gordon had a solid game again but Mike Gordon did him better by controlling the game on all ends of the floor. Both Gordon’s would out distance the Team A-Game guards and hand them a lop-sided loss.

Game 5 advantage goes to Mike Gordon

Battle of the Back Court – 6th Match Up Round 2

Rush Hour – Andre Dabney
Rush Hour – Anthony Nelson

No head to head match up in this contest but Rush Hour had to contend with the very talented Country Line out of Philly.  Anthony Nelson played a solid game dropping off 3 assists and shooting 84% from the free throw line to get into double digits in scoring.

But it was the play of Andre Dabney that electrified the crowd.  Dabney used his elusive quickness to outplay the talented backcourt of Country Line who featured several Division 1/Semi Pro players.  Dabney connected on a deep corner trey over a 6’8” defender to complete an amazing come back and help Rush Hour win the game.

Game 6 advantage goes to Andre Dabney

BATTLE OF THE BACK COURT - ROUND 1

Battle of the Back Court - 1st Match up Round 1

Team A-Game – Tyrone Johnson
3z PleaZe – Sekou Harris
Team A-Game – Mike Price
Team A-Game – Anthony Baskerville
3z PleaZe – Allen Brown

Tyrone Johnson out distance himself from the rest of the guards in the 1st game of the tournament.  Johnson scored the most points (12) shooting an efficient 67% from the floor.  Johnson was also a perfect 4 for 4 from the foul line. The all-important assist to turnover ratio for a guard is critical.  Johnson had 5:1 assist to turnover ratio further exemplifying his floor generalship command. To add to his stat line Tyrone grabbed 5 rebounds.

A distance 2nd was Sekou “Trey Swish” Harris.  Harris scored the second most points out of all the guards but his turnover ratio doomed his chance in the 1st “BATTLE OF THE BACK COURT”.

Battle of the Back Court – 2nd Match up Round 1

Bada Bing – Derrick Gordon
Bada Bing – Mike Gordon
South Side – Antoine Patterson

Antoine Patterson had one of the best performances in the Gee-Gee Brown Tournament last year knocking down 6 of 7 3-pointers in one game.  Bada Bing did their scouting report and did not give Antoine any thing easy.  Patterson was at a disadvantage with the Gordon brothers teaming up to combine for 32 points, which outscored the entire South Side team for the game.  Derrick scored a game high 17 points in this match up over the 2 former teammates of the 2004 State Championship team.  Derrick dropped off a game high 5 assists to show off his point guard skills.  Mike and Antoine did more shooting than passing as both 2004 players combined for 0 assists.

Mike Gordon followed Derrick as the second highest scorer in the game with 15 points while Antoine scored a team high 13 points for South Side.  Mike made a push to overtake his younger brother by exemplifying his defensive side with 5 steals but Derrick came out on top with a more balance statistical performance.

Battle of the Back Court – 3rd Match up Round 1

No head to head competition in this round as Rush Hour did battle with last year’s runner-up, the Blazin Bums who did not have any players from Plainfield.  The back court of Anthony Nelson and Andre Dabney proved to be too much as Rush Hour won their opening round game. Nelson and Dabney did not stand out in this game but were unselfish and both gave a solid performance.

Dabney scored more points but Nelson dished out more assists, had less turnovers, and grabbed more rebounds than his counter part.
