Plainfield vs Neptune story...

See PlainfieldSportsNews.com for the story of the Plainfield vs Neptune game.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. Neptune Game

Plainfield played a good game against a scrappy fast aggressive defensive opponent. On a scale of 10, the Cards played a 5.6. This ties the lowest rating of the season. The quickness of Neptune may have shown tarnish in the Cardinals armor.

Neptune feature one of the top up and coming sophomore guards in the state. Ikie Calderon quickness and outside touch makes him one of the most valuable players on the Scarlet Raiders team. Although, the key player for Neptune that did all the unheralded work was Senior Jamaal Hubbard. His hustle on defense and on the boards set up Neptune for the upset.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 1st. The Cardinals shot 4 – 5 from behind the 3 point line and shot 5 – 6 in the period. The Plainfield defense held Neptune to their only single digit scoring period of 8 points.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 3rd. Neptune went on a 10 – 0 run to take the lead. The scrappy full court press of the Scarlet Fliers forced the Cards into 10 turnovers in the 3rd period.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 21}
Johnson was the high scorer for the game with 26 points shooting 78% from below the arc, 50% from the 3 and 75% from the foul line. His accuracy was even more impressive considering the incredible full court pressure that Neptune applied all game. Neptune used 12 different players to keep up the pressure. Johnson seems to thrive off of pressure by nailing 4 free throws in a row with less than a minute left to ice the game.

2) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 16}
Without Sears presence in the middle the Cards would have lost. Although Sears scored only 5 points, it was when he scored them. With Cards fighting for their lives Sears scored all 5 points in the pressure filled 4th period. The young sophomore did not let playing in hostile territory affect his game. Sears also grabbed a team high 8 rebounds, 3 block shots, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

3) Plainfield – Senior Mike Williams – 6’7” {ER – 13}
Mike Williams provided the backup scoring for the Cards. Mike scored 10 points and added 7 rebounds. Mike showed that his game is not all down low by hitting several midrange jumpers. His presence in the middle (1 block shot) and his disruptive presence down low formed an intimidating twin towers along with Sears.

4) Neptune – Senior Jamaal Hubbard – 6’2” {ER – 13}
Many thought the Calderon was the key to Neptune’s impressive performance but the Scarlet Raiders shot only 17% from the three point line and shot an unimpressive 65% from the foul line. Jamaal Hubbard scrappy defense forced nearly half of the 30 turnovers on the Cardinals. Hubbard had a game high 9 rebounds to go along with 8 tough points amongst the towers of Plainfield interior.

5) Plainfield – Sophomore Jahmal Lane 6’3” {ER – 13}
Jahmal is quickly gaining varsity experience well beyond his sophomore status. Suffering from one of his poorest shooting night, Lane new that defense should always remain consistent. Lane grabbed 8 boards, 4 steals, 3 blocks (4 consecutive games with a block shot) and although not his best offensive night, still manage 7 points.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Seton Hall Prep vs Plainfield

For the story see PlainfieldSportsNews.com

Fanatic Summation of the Seton Hall Prep vs. Plainfield Game

Plainfield played a good game against a tough opponent. On a scale of 10, the Cards played a 5.6. This is the lowest rating of the season but a top ten team in Seton Hall had something to do with that.

Seton Hall feature one of the top guards in the state. Sterling Gibbs is being recruited by multiple D1 schools. Sterling was simply sensational. Sterling and Tyrone are in the conversation with Gilchrist of St. Pat’s as the top juniors in NJ.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was overtime. The Cardinals defense rebounded from a disappointing 4th period by only allowing one shot attempt and no field goals made by the Pirates. The Cardinals shot 2 for 3 from the floor and 4 for 5 from the foul line in the extra session.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 4th. Sporting a 5 point lead, Plainfield youth showed. The relentless defense of the Pirates caused multiple turnovers. This sparked a Pirates come back and a near victory.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Seton Hall Prep – Junior Sterling Gibbs – 6’2” {ER – 22}*
Gibbs was the high scorer for the game with 27 points shooting 70 % from below the arc, 50% from the 3 and 4 steals. His play was worth the price of admission.

2) Seton Hall Prep – Senior John Caprio – 6’5” {ER – 20}
Without Caprio the Pirates would have lost by double digits. He did all the dirty work for the Pirates and contributed significantly on the offensive end. Caprio pick the pockets of the Cardinals with his bruising defense garnishing 8 steals. Caprio shot an efficient 64% from the floor to tally 19 points.

3) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 18}
Tyrone probably would be rated 1st for this game just based on his leadership ability. His clutch foul shooting (76% for the game). But Johnson shot better with the pressure at its peak in the 4th period and overtime (7 for 9 from the foul line). Johnson dropped 14 points in the 4th and overtime. Johnson also contributed on the boards with 7 rebounds.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Jahmal Lane – 6’3” {ER – 15}
It probably was a mistake to give Lane a busted lip in the first period. After catching an elbow in the face and forced to the bench to stop the bleeding, Lane returned with inspired play. Lane scored 10 points with an efficient 63% shooting from the floor. Lane also led the team, along with Johnson, in rebounds with 7. Lane at 6’3” may be the top shot blocker in NJ under 6’5”. Lane has 3 games in a row this season with at least one block shot. Lane rejected 3 shots against the Pirates. The Block Party Watch is on.

5) Plainfield – Sophomore Sekou Harris 5’8” {ER – 11}
Sekou “Little Dre” Harris quickness and ball handling ability has proven clutch for the Cards. His steal with the game as good as lost saved the day for the Cardinals. Harris took all quality shots shooting 2 – 3 within the arc and 1 – 2 from behind the arc. Harris was perfect from the foul line. But his timely 3 steals served as a catalyst for victory.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Lakewood vs. Plainfield game

Plainfield played a very good game. On a scale of 10, the Cards played a 9.4.
Lakewood feature one of the top players in the state. Jarrod Davis is being recruited by multiple Big East schools. Not to be out done, Georgetown, Villanova, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Maryland and a list of major D1 schools are after Tyrone Johnson. Johnson gave a great effort leading the cards to a 17 point victory. Justin Sears, Sekou Harris, and Jamal Lane (all sophomores) gave great efforts doing all the workmen work for the Cardinal victory.

The most impressive period for the Lubreski defensive minded Cardinals was the 3rd. After Jarrod Davis nearly outscored the entire Cardinals in the 2nd period, Lubreski put Tyrone Johnson on the talented sky walker Davis. Johnson responded by holding Davis to only 3 shot attempts and 2 points for the decisive 3rd period. Plainfield outscored Lakewood 11 – 4 during that stretch. They held the Piners to two field goals made.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 2nd. Jarrod Davis was impressive. His leaping ability, his accurate shooting from behind the arc, and his intimidating defense, blocking a couple of dunk attempts by the Cards was simply impressive. The Cards was outscored 12 – 10. Davis scored 10 point for the quarter.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 22}*
Johnson was the high scorer for the Cardinals with 19 points shooting 60% from below the arc, 67% from the 3, 5 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists and 2 block shots.

2) Lakewood – Junior Jarrod Davis – 6’7” {ER – 16}
6’7” junior Davis plays with exceptional athleticism. He has range from the 3 and can shoot over his competition in the paint. He challenges any shot in the paint with his quick jumping ability. Davis scored a game high 24 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and 2 block shots. Davis is currently being recruited by the majority of the schools in the Big East Conference.

3) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 16}
Although Justin did not have his best shooting game, he focused on controlling the glass. He played a Dennis Rodman like game by grabbing nearly every missed attempt on the floor. Justin grabbed a team season high 15 rebounds. Justin also added 3 block shots.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Sekou Harris – 5’8”” {ER – 13}
Sekou gives the Plainfield Fanatics Andre Dabney flash backs. His speed and ball handling skills is exciting. Harris had a game high in assist for the second game in a row. Harris was also efficient with his shooting by knocking down 67% of his shots. Harris has stepped in to take off some of the pressure off of Johnson at the point position.

5) Plainfield – Sophomore Jamal Lane 6’3” {ER – 11}
In only 2 years of high school, Jamal has been a contributor to the varsity program the last 2 years. Lane finished the game as the 2nd highest scorer. Lane shot an efficient 71% from the floor. Last year Lane was the 3rd leading rejecter having 7 consecutive games with at least 1 block shot. Lane has not missed a beat. He has started the season at least 1 block in each game.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Linden will be a force again!!!

Who said Linden would be down this year?

Coach Phil Colicchio is arguably the best basketball coach in the state. If there is another coach who gets the most of the hand that is dealt, I have yet to meet him.

Linden opens the season with a shellacking of a talented Newark Tech 60 – 26. Linden’s defense which has always been impressive stifled the Newark Tech from scoring in double digits in any single period.

When comparing Linden and Plainfield with common opponents, Linden scored 60 points against Newark Tech. Plainfield scored 69 against Newark Tech in a 5 period scrimmage. Linden gave up 26 points while Plainfield gave up 42.

Although the Plainfield – Newark Tech game was a scrimmage and Plainfield played their entire roster, it shows that Linden will be force to reckon with again.

A Fanatic pre-season outlook...

With the postponement of the St. Anthony’s game it leaves time to analyze the upcoming Cardinal season.

Next up Lakewood at the Neptune Holiday Jubilee. Lakewood returns the majority of their team from last season. Size, quickness, and dangerous behind the 3 point line, this game should be interesting.

The Cardinal’s starts off the season with a respectable ranking, according to the NJ Star Ledger of 14th in the state. The Born Power Index has Plainfield rated as high as 11th in the state including prep schools.

Locally, St. Patrick is the big favorite to win the counties. Plainfield is rated second with our nemesis Linden rated 3rd.
Others:
Elizabeth lossed a ton of talent last year but you can not count out the largest high school in the state. The talent is there. If they come out to play is another subject.
Union is without the best shooter in the state, Ashon White (Prep). Union has good size with athletic ability. Look for Union to upset a couple of teams this year.
Rahway lossed the majority of their starters.
St. Mary seems to be improving and could creep into the top 3 in the county.
New Providence is a team that is quietly improving every year.
Hillside has a solid returning shooting guard but their neighborly competition (Union, Elizabeth, Shabazz, and Irvington) are all probably better. It does not help that many Hillside residents (boys and girls) choose to play at one of the previously mention high schools.
Westfield is returning the majority of their starters and should improve compared to last year but the competition in Union is stiff for the Blue Devils to make some noise.
Roselle is a small school contender but may have problems against the other Union
County favorites.
Scotch Plains-Fanwood is going through a rebuilding year and should make some noise next year.
Favorites:
St Patrick’s, no need to enter them into the discussion. A #1 ranking nationally should be disqualification from the counties. (Especially since 2/5 of their starters are from Plainfield)
Plainfield will be battling with Linden, Union, and St. Mary’s for the #2 seed. Getting the #2 seed is as good as winning the counties this year.

Grp IV Section 2
Plainfield is the favorite in this section. Should receive stiff challenges from Linden, Elizabeth, Union, Ridge, Piscataway, and Columbia. Ridge was the original hands down favorite, but arguably the top player in the section Ishaq Pitt transferred to St. John Vianey.

Grp IV Statewide
The Star Ledger has Paterson Kennedy as the favorite and Cherokee as the South Jersey favorite. Last year Plainfield was the Star Ledger favorite but lost in the Grp IV semis to the team that upset Paterson Kennedy last year, Paterson Eastside (participating in Grp III this year). So far when Paterson and Plainfield meet in the playoffs, the underdog is 3-0.

When the current varsity players from Plainfield were playing recreation, this was their topic of discussion of the future starting 5 and reserves.

PG – 6’3” Junior – Tyrone Johnson
SG – 6’3” Junior – Miles Davis
SG – 6’3” Junior – Derrick Gordon
PF – 6’6” Senior – Chase Plummer
C – 6’8” Sophomore – Jamal Wormerly

Other’s fighting for playing time
G – 6’2” Senior – Mark Price
G – 5’8” Sophomore – Sekou Harris
F – 6’5” Sophomore – Diijon Allen-Jordan
F – 6’4” Senior – Nate Grant-Dewitt
C – 6’7” Sophomore – Justin Sears
F – 6’7” Senior – Mike Williams
G – 6’1” Senior – Ricky Terry
G – 6’0” Senior – Terrill Johnson
F – 6’3” Senior – Dominique Blackmon
G – 6’3” Sophomore – Jamal Lane
F – 6’4” Senior – John Noel
F – 6’5” Freshman – Denzel Christian

WOW – this team would be #1 in the country for the next 2 years....

Fanatic Summation of the Scotch Plains – Fanwood vs. Plainfield Game

Plainfield played a near perfect game. On a scale of 10, the Cards played a 9.7.
In fairness to the Raiders, they lost their entire starting 5. But in fairness to the Cardinals they lost one of the best play makers in the state, Isaiah Epps (Hardgrave Military Academy Prep – Pitt commit), sharp shooter Anthony Baskerville, big men and top rebounders and shot blockers Khalid Muhammed and Jabril Elliot.

The most impressive period for the Lubreski defensive minded Cardinals was the 2nd. They held the Raiders to zero field goals made.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the first. The Raiders shot near perfect in the opening period taking a 9 – 8 lead at the end of 1.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Senior Nate Grant-Dewitt – 6’4” {ER - 18)
Nate was the high scorer of the game with 17 points shooting 60 % from below the arc, 75% from the 3 and perfect from the foul line.

2) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 18}
At only 15 years old, the 6’7” sophomore is playing above the rim. Sears shot 67% from the floor, was perfect from the foul line with a block shot, a steal, and 6 rebounds.

3) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 16}
Playing the guard position and playing above the rim is a lethal combination in high school basketball. Dunking with ease or slamming it in a crowd is nothing new to the Plainfield fans when it comes to Johnson. Johnson excited the crowd with his dunking ability. But he is also an unselfish player. Johnson dropped 4 assists, 3 steals and scored 11 exciting points.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Jamal Lane – 6’3” {ER – 16}
Playing his 2nd season as a varsity player, Lane has experience beyond most sophomores. His 11 rebounds led all players. His exciting moves in the paint helped contribute 8 points and defensive intensity gave him a game high 4 steals.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Williams – 6’7” {ER – 11}
Mike combined with Justin to form the twin towers for the Cardinals. With the sophomore tandem of Lane and Sears combining for 18 rebounds, Mike Williams patrolled the paint and started his own block party. Mike rejected 4 shots in less than 3 quarters of play. To add to his efficient play, Mike did not commit any turnovers.

The efficient rating {ER} was based on shooting percentage, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Williams and Johnson Leads Cardinals in Scrimmage

Newark Tech came in with size, 6’6” junior Eric Anderson, 6’5” Bill Dobbs and 6’5” freshman Dwayne Merrill tried to keep the Cardinals off the glass but the Card’s continued their preseason domination on the boards.

The Cardinals continue to impress on the defensive end of the floor. 6’7” senior Mike Williams and 6’6” sophomore Justin Sears disrupted every shot attempt in the 1st session of the scrimmage. 6’2” senior Mike Price on the ball dribble defense, gave Newark Tech guard, Desmond Cotton fits bringing the ball up court and disrupting Tech’s offensive setups. Plainfield continued their game of runs. After giving up the first basket of the session, the Cards went on a 20 – 4 run. 6’3” junior Tyrone Johnson led the way hitting pull ups, 3’s and slashing lay-ups to lead the Cardinals in the 1st session. Plainfield shot a sizzling 88% from the floor, 50% from behind the arc, and 75% from the charity stripe to dominate the first session. Cards 20 – 6.

Newark Tech’s 6’6” junior Eric Anderson showed his versatility by stepping out behind the arc to drill a 3 to start the 2nd session. But the Cardinals length and quickness did not allow another field goal for the remainder of the session. The Card’s sophomores continue to impress by dominating the boards. The Windex cleaning was led by Sears, Lane and Harris combining for 10 rebounds in the session. The offensive highlight came when sophomore Justin Sears took a pass from senior Ricky Terry in the paint and finished off the shot with a 2 handed slam. Cards 11 – 7.

Newark Tech picked up the defensive intensity by only allowing 2 field goals made by the Cards in the 3rd session. But the Cards increased that intensity by holding Tech to only 1 field goal made. Sears, Allen-Jordan and Williams continued their disruption in the paint. Cards 8 – 2.

The Cards got on the board 1st in the 4th session with a deep bomb by sophomore Sekou Harris. But (Seton Hall transfer) Desmond Cotton put Tech on his back by shooting 5-6 from the floor and 2-2 from the charity stripe. Ricky Terry and Harris hit 2 more bombs but it was not enough. Newark Tech 19 – 17.

In the final session the aggressive defense led to the Cards shooting from the charity stripe. Although both teams made 3 field goals from the floor. The Cards shot perfect from the foul line. Cards 13 – 8.

Notes:

The Cards showed improvement from the foul line: Tyrone Johnson 6 – 6, Terrell Johnson 2 – 2, and Justin Sears 2 – 2 led the way for the Cardinals to shoot nearly 80% from the foul line.

Sears, Johnson, and Harris led the offensive output for the Cards.

The Cards out rebounded Newark Tech 3 to 1. Mike Williams was impressive leading the way with the Windex cleaning.

Sekou Harris and Ricky Terry led the way in assists while Sears was Mr. Rejecter for the day.

The Cards will travel to Hudson County on Tuesday to play a tough Dickinson High School team for the final tune up of the season.

Sophomores Allen-Jordan, Sears, & Harris lead Cardinals

Central Jersey Academy High Prep (CJAH) matched up size for size but may have been a little more physically stronger than the younger Cardinals. The Cardinals accepted the pre-season challenge and came out on top 3 of the 5 periods.

The Cardinals played man to man against the more physical CJAH and played evenly up until the final 2 minutes of the period. The Cardinals went on a 6 – 0 run with several fast break opportunities punctuated with a one handed stuff by Tyrone Johnson.
Plainfield edges CJAH 12 - 8

The Card’s started off the 2nd period as they finished the 1st with a 6 – 0 run. CJAH calls time out to regroup. CJAH came out of the time out with an 11 – 4 run to finish the 2nd session and edging the Cards 11-10.

The 3rd session was played evenly again, but today it seemed the team who would make a run would take advantage of the session. The Cardinals would be the team in the 3rd session to go on an 11 – 4 run punctuated with a tremendous slam on a contested shot by 6’5” sophomore Diijon Allen-Jordan. Plainfield 17-11

CJAH received a tongue lashing from their coach concerning their play. They responded by going on a 13 – 3 run to start the 4th session led by the sizzling 3 point shooting of Douglas Mills. Plainfield made a run also punctuated by a tremendous baseline slam by another sophomore, 6’6” Justin Sears. CJAH 17-10.

After giving up 17 points in the 4th session, the Cards played tough in your face man to man defense. The Cards focused on denying any open shots for the hot shooting guard Douglas Miller of CJAH. Miller could not get any 3 point attempts off during the final session. Again, another run would decide the period. The run was initiated with a baseline shake by Tyrone Johnson who had to show the sophomore studs how it’s supposed to be done by slamming it home. The Cards went on a 10-2 run and eventually closed out the scrimmage taken advantage of the 5th session 11-6.

Notes:

This was first out of 3 scrimmages that the Cards were out rebounded but that was countered by yet another balance scoring effort by the Cards led by Tyrone Johnson, Diijon Allen-Jordan and Justin Sears.

Justin led the team in rebounds; while yet another sophomore Sakou Harris led the team in assists.

Douglas Mills led CJAH with his 67% shooting from behind the arc.

Plainfield Basketball Scrimmage

Plainfield will be hosting CJAH at 4:00 pm at the Rico Parenti Gymnasium located at 950 Park Ave.

Plainfield will continue to tune up their skills for the Friday December 18th (7pm) home opener against neighborly rival, The Scotch Plains-Fanwood Raiders.
