Fanatic Summation of the Elizabeth vs. Plainfield Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.5. Elizabeth kept the game interesting in the first half with the hot shooting of J.R. Pringley. Plainfield adjusted well in the 2nd half creating multiple turnovers with their pressure defense. A combination of Tyrone Johnson hot shooting and the Cardinals dominating the boards, Plainfield was able to pull away for the victory.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 1st. Elizabeth’s 6’6” junior, J.R. Pringley took advantage of the Cardinal's lethargic start. Pringley dropped Elizabeth’s first 7 points to give the Minutemen their only lead of the game 7 – 6 midway through the 1st period.

The best period was the 3rd. The Cardinals swarming defense created multiple turnovers. The defensive intensity limited the number of touches for the hot shooting Pringley. The Cardinals were able to hold the Minutemen to 7 third period points. The hot shooting Johnson connected on 4 – 4 shooting including a three pointer. The twin towers of Mike Williams and Justin Sears created havoc with their length grabbing rebounds, collecting steals and starting fast breaks off of turnovers for easy transitional buckets which led to 20 points scored in the 3rd period.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 36}*
Johnson returned strong after a sub par performance against St. Pats. Johnson scored the highest efficiency rating breaking the season high rating set 2 days ago by the #1 player in the Nation, Michael Gilchrist {ER – 33}. Johnson dropped a season high 30 points and missed a double-double by 1 rebound. Johnson shot a blazing 88% from below the arc and 3 – 5 (60%) from above the arc.

2) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 23}
Justin played above the rim against the Minutemen. For the first game this season, Justin did not have a rejection. But Justin made up for that by giving a double-double performance. Sears grabbed a game high 10 rebounds, scored 12 points, had a game high 3 steals and tied (Sekou Harris) for game high in assists. Justin excited the front row Cardinal Fanatics with a full court drive for a slam.

3) Elizabeth– Junior J.R. Pringley– 6’6” {ER – 22}
J.R. Pringley single handily kept the Minutemen within striking distance. Pringley, who has family ties in the Queen City, shot 62% from below the arc, and the 6’6” junior shot 67% from the 3. Pringley had a team high 22 points and led the Minutemen in rebounds.

4) Elizabeth – Senior Jihad Wright – 6’5” {ER – 9}
Jihad bruising defense limited the damage in the paint against the twin towers of Plainfield. With Pringley assisting the guards, Jihad was the only interior presence on the offensive end. Wright was the second highest scorer for the Minutemen. Wright was perfect from the foul line and shot 50% from the floor.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Williams 6’7” {ER – 8}
William’s height gives him the ability to shoot over most opponents. His midrange game is getting noticed. He picked up the slack on the defensive end to lead the game in rejections. William’s also shot perfect from the free throw line

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. St. Patrick Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played a 2.8. Plainfield was ambushed by national power St. Patrick. St. Patrick was led by Duke bound Kyrie Irving. Irving played only ¾ of the game and was not in the starting lineup. He made up for his brief absence by leading all scorers for the game. Michael Gilchrist showed why he could forgo his senior year of high school and go pro over seas if he wishes. The 6’7” junior played a flawless game frustrating the Plainfield Cardinals.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 2nd period. The usually patient Cardinal offense, panic in the 2nd period after only scoring 3 points in the first 8 minutes. Although the Cardinals nailed 3 three pointers, the up and down game favored the multi weaponry Celtics. Irving, who did not play until late in the 1st period, came out firing and took advantage of the up and down play. The nimble 6’7” Gilchrist was able to score on high percentage slams. The Cardinals were able to score 13 points during the 2nd period but at a price of giving up their defensive tenacity. St. Patrick was able to drop 25 points during that same time frame. This is the most points given up during any 8 minute stretch this year.

The best period was the 3rd. The Cardinals came out of the half playing the game they wanted to play. Plainfield got a big burst from the outstanding shooting of 6’7” senior Mike Williams who dropped 8 points on 4 – 4 shooting. If it was not for the outstanding play of Gilchrist and Plainfield resident Chase Plummer, the Cardinals would have been able to get the score down to single digits. The defensive effort was good during this 3rd period. The Cardinals guards of Sekou Harris, Allen Brown, Mike Price, and Tyrone Johnson were able to keep Irving from scoring during this 8 minute stretch.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) St. Patrick – Junior Michael Gilchrist – 6’7” {ER – 33}*
Gilchrist showed that he is the best ball player in the nation. Gilchrist shot a perfect 9 – 9 from the floor. His quickness, leaping ability and agility is superior to most high school athletes. The most impressive thing about Mike is he is not even 80% healthy. Mike also grabbed 7 rebounds, had 3 steals, had 1 rejection, and dropped 1 assist. We should be seeing him on the NBA court in the near future.

2) St. Patrick – Senior Kyrie Irving – 6’3” {ER – 25}
The Duke bound St. Patrick stud showed the fans in attendance his multiple talented skills. Kyrie was hitting every shot attempt from all angles. Irving was almost perfect from the field. Irving scored a game high 21 points shooting 88% from below the arc and 50% from the 3. Kyrie also dropped off 5 assists and grabbed 3 rebounds

3) St. Patrick – Senior Chase Plummer – 6’6” {ER – 23}
Chase was also perfect from the floor with his shooting. But he surprised his home town Cardinals with his outside touch hitting 2 step back 3 pointers. Chase also led the game in rebounds and steals.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 16}
Justin is not getting any days off. Sears has faced a barrage of big men all season and today he faced arguably the nation best player. Justin finished the game shooting 4 – 5 from the floor, grabbing 4 boards, garnishing 3 steals and 1 rejection. Justin has at least 1 rejection in every game played this year.

5) St. Patrick – Senior Kevin Boyle 5’11” {ER – 15}
Boyle’s harassing defense on Johnson was the catalyst for the on-slaught the Celtics put on the Cardinals. Boyle disrupted Plainfield’s sets continuously on the defensive end creating multiple turnovers. Offensively, Kevin ran the point as well as you would wish your point guard to do. Boyle dropped a game high 7 of St. Patrick’s 22 assists.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

*Breaks Tyrone Johnson season high efficiency rating of 28.

Fanatic Summation of the Cardinal McCarrick vs. Plainfield Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.1. Plainfield played a good game defensively in the 1st half to hold Cardinal McCarrick to 17 points. The Cardinals seemed to settle on jump shots early in the game for the second consecutive contest. The Cards shot selection was not as selective as in previous games. Cardinal McCarrick 6’6” Morece Isaac held his own against the triple towers of Allen-Jordan, Williams and Sears.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 4th period. Plainfield usually puts the game on ice in the final period but Cardinal McCarrick outscored the Cardinals 14 - 10. This is only the second game the Cards were outscored in the final period this season.

The most impressive period was the 1st. The Cardinals started off the game with their defense leading the way. The Cardinals controlled the glass out-rebounding their opponent 7 – 3 which led to the Cards 14 – 7 run in the first 8 minutes of the game.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game

With Johnson out, Justin led the Cardinals offensively. Justin was the game high scorer with 16 points shooting 67% from the floor. Sears also grabbed 5 rebounds and rejected 4 shots

Morece scored a team high 15 points shooting 50% from the floor and 75% from the foul line. Morece controlled the glass with his game high 8 rebounds. Morece also had 4 rejections to go along with 2 steals affecting the Cardinals offensive game.

3) Plainfield – Sophomore Diijon Allen-Jordan – 6’5” {ER – 15}
Diijon took the role of Mr. Clutch by hitting his foul shots down the stretch to seal the victory. Diijon shot 86% (4 for 5 in the final 5 minutes) from the charity line for the game. The 6’5” sophomore shot 50% from the floor, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 rejections.

4) Plainfield – Junior Allen Brown – 6’0” {ER – 15}
Better known as "Lock Down Brown" for his defensive efforts, Allen played one of his most efficient game this season offensively. Allen shot 67% from the floor and was perfect from the foul line to help the team shoot an efficient 75% from the freebie line. Allen also dropped off 4 assists

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price 6’1” {ER – 13}
Mike’s defensive effort was probably one of the main reasons the Cardinals won the game. Mike had a game high 6 steals. His defense on Cardinal McCarrick’s guards held Cardinal McCarrick’s shooting percentage below 30%. Price’s deceptive leaping ability helped him have a team high 7 rebounds. Mike also dropped off 3 assists.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. Westfield Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.5. Plainfield played a good game defensively in the 2nd half to overcome a sluggish 1st half. The Cardinals seemed to settle on jump shots early in the game. The Cards shot selection was not as selective as in previous games. Westfield’s 6’8” Pat Sabatino did affect the interior play of the Cardinals. The Cardinals adjusted well and overcame a game Blue Devil.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 1st period. Westfield’s Jaraad Rogers and Max Fusaro hit a couple of 3’s while big man Pat Sabatino controlled the interior play on the offensive and defensive end. Westfield defensive efforts cause the Cards to turn the ball over 7 times in the first period. The Blue Devil’s outscored the Cardinals 14 – 9 during the first 8 minutes of the game.

The most impressive period was the 3rd. The Cardinals started off the 2nd half with a 7 – 0 run. Plainfield defensive effort was outstanding. Westfield’s sharp shooter Jaraad Rogers hit for three 3 pointers in the first half. In the 3rd quarter Rogers was only able to get off one shot attempt, a miss three attempt. Plainfield held the Blue Devils to 1 field goal made in the 3rd period. Offensively, Allen Brown and Nate Grant-Dewitt hit a couple of 3’s to spark the Cardinals to 16 3rd period points.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Westfield – Senior Pat Sabatino – 6’8” {ER – 23}
Sabatino played harder as the game went along. Pat had a double-double in points and rebounds. His shooting from the low post was 100% until he missed his first shot of the game late in the 4th period. Pat was the high scorer for the Blue Devils with 16 points with a shooting accuracy of 75%. Pat was the game high rebounder with 10 boards. Pat also contributed with 2 blocks and a steal.

2) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 22}
Tyrone continues to fill up the stat sheet. Johnson actually shot one of his lowest shooting percentages this year at 58% scoring a game high 24 points. Johnson tenacity to get to the rim earned him multiple visits to the charity stripe. Johnson fully obliged by shooting 77% from the foul line. Tyrone’s slight struggle on the offensive end must have made him pick up his defense. Johnson snatched a game high 6 steals to go along with 4 rebounds.

3) Westfield – Senior Jaraad Rogers – 5’11” {ER – 17}
Jaraad’s 3 point shooting effort gave the Cardinals fits in the 1st half. Jaarad hit 3 out of 6 three point attempts and went 2 for 2 from below the arc. Rogers also grabbed 5 boards, 2 steals and 2 assists to help the Blue Devils have an early control of the game.

4) Plainfield – Senior Nate Grant-Dewitt – 6’4” {ER – 15}
Nate’s 3-point career accuracy is well known in the basketball circles. When Nate’s on the floor most teams make a point to not give him open shots. But in this game Nate was the team leader in rebounds with 6 boards. Nate also collected a steal and dropped off an assist.

5) Plainfield – Sophomore Diijon Allen-Jordan 6’5” {ER – 14}
With Pat Sabatino getting Plainfield’s center Justin Sears in foul trouble, Diijon assumed the responsibility of defending Westfield’s big man. Diijon’s quickness and leaping ability gave Sabatino fits. Although Diijon gave up 3 inches to Westfield’s’ Sabatino, Diijon was still able to grab 5 rebounds and shoot at a 50% clip from the floor while only playing 3 periods in the game.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. Rahway Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played a 9.3. Plainfield played a very good game defensively and offensively. Not forcing the issue on offense, the Cardinals were very selective with their shot attempts. While defensively they were making it difficult for Rahway to score with out their shot being contested. Plainfield had the height advantage and used it to dominate the boards and reject multiple shots.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 3rd period. Rahway’s Kasim Smith sharp shooting made the Cardinals rethink their zone defense. The Cardinals were not outscored but Smith’s two 3 pointers helped Rahway even up the 3rd period scoring 11 – 11.

The most impressive period was the 2nd. The Cardinals shot an impressive 3 – 3 from behind the arc. Johnson & Johnson (Tyrone & Terrill) combined for the bombs. Mike Price forced the issue during this period with his aggressive on the ball defense and penetrating moves offensively. Price filled up every stat on the stat sheet from steals, points, rejections, rebounds, and dishing. The Cardinals outscored Rahway 20 – 11 during their most impressive period of the day.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 28}*
Johnson keeps playing his efficient game very quietly. Tyrone shot a blistering 88% missing only 1 shot attempt below the arc. With his fingers feeling on fire, his heat check shots from behind the arc were nearly as accurate as his lay-ups. Johnson shot 67% from the three. With 0 turnovers committed, Johnson minimized any errors. The Union County Detective squad is investigating the game high 5 steals by Johnson. Johnson’s efficiency rating is the highest this season out doing Linden’s Qadeer Lewis ER of 26.

2) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 15}
Mike Price defensive skills have been on display since he helped his Jefferson Elementary School with the Elementary City Basketball Championship when he was a 5th grader. Price had a complete balance game. Mike shot 60% from below the arc. I guess he felt that he should shoot from deeper range to increase his accuracy as Price was perfect from behind the arc. The 6’2 Price also showed his leaping ability by leading the game in rebounds.

3) Rahway – Senior Halcerom Kornegey – 5’11” {ER – 11}
Kornegey shot 50% from behind the arc while shooting 75% below the arc. Kornegey also led the game in assist and was only second to Mike Price in steals with 4.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 10}
Justin is playing the role of big man well in his first year of varsity experience. Sears shot 67% from the floor. Sears also led the game in rejections with 3 blocks. Justin also was second to the high flying Price in rebounds for the game.

5) Plainfield – Senior Michael Williams 6’7” {ER – 6}
Williams’s length, quickness and jumping ability caused havoc against the Indians. Williams helped prevent Rahway from achieving any high percentage shot attempts. His versatility to stick his opponents low or to recover to guard on the perimeter proved important in holding their second consecutive opponent below 40 points.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Shabazz vs. Plainfield Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.4. The Shabazz Bulldogs has three big men at 6’8” that are all seniors and has several years of varsity experience. The fanatics in attendance new the youthful Cardinals would experience growing pains playing a Shabazz team that swept the Cardinals in an away and home game last year. Although the Cardinals were out rebounded by the bigger Bulldogs, Plainfield’s defense rose to the occasion to shutdown Shabazz to seal the victory.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 2nd. The Cards had some more growing pains with the rough aggressive, more experience Shabazz Bulldogs. The Bulldogs out rebounded the Cardinals 2 – 1. Shabazz was able to score the majority of the points off of put backs due to their dominance on the boards.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 4th. The Cardinals multiple defensive sets kept Shabazz from ever running any offensive sets successfully. The Cardinals held the Bulldogs to only 2 field goals made in the final period. Plainfield sealed the game on a 15 – 4 run.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 25}
Tyrone scored a game high 20 points by shooting 71% below the arc. Johnson hot shooting continued on the foul line where he shot 88% by hitting 7 – 8 free throws. Johnson also led the team with 7 rebounds and 5 assits.

2) Shabazz – Senior Kadere Johnson – 6’8” {ER – 16}
Kadere scored 7 points but his rebounding gave him the Windex Cleaner award for the game. Kadere led all rebounders with 11 boards. He also had 2 steals, 2 rejections, and shot an efficient 5 – 7 from the free throw line.

3) Shabazz – Senior Dabion Bordingham – 6’8” {ER – 14}
Bordingham had a team high 11 points. Along with Kadere Johnson, Bordingham controlled the boards with his 9 rebounds missing a double double by 1 rebound. Dabion shot perfect from the foul line (5 – 5). His height and leaping ability caused havoc in the middle which forced the Cardinals to shoot one of their lowest shooting percentage of the year.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 14}
Justin continues to learn on the job. Sears is absorbing the game like a sponge. For each new challenge a game brings, Justin seems to turn into the matrix to give the Plainfield fans something to cheer about. Justin dropped 9 points shooting at a 75% clip from the floor and hitting 3 – 5 from the foul line. Justin grabbed 4 boards against the triple towers of Shabazz.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price 6’2” {ER – 11}
Mikes on the ball defense against opponents point guards has been impressive all season. Mike does all the work that goes unnoticed or under appreciated. His on the ball defense has disrupted opponents from getting their offensive sets in a rhythm. Price is not all defense and can score if the situation on hand demands it. Price scored 8 points, grabbed 3 rebounds, dropped 2 assists, and picked the pockets of Shabazz once

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Union vs. Plainfield Game

The Union Farmers coming off a brutal early season schedule came into the Rico Parenti Gymnasium battle tested. The youthful Cardinals have their own battle scars from defeating 4 teams that at one point were ranked in the top 20 in the state. The Farmers came in with one of the highest scorers in the county in Jonathan Merceous. The 6’5” Senior tried to carry his team against the Cardinal’s but the slamming Card’s turned back the Farmers.

Union’s defensive game plan was to ruff up the young Cardinals with 6’5” Senior James Daniels. Daniels pushed around young Sears and Allen-Jordan but the Cards countered the Farmers by dominating the glass and timely substitution of Dominique Blackmon. Blackmon is getting to be known as the man to shut down opponents offensive stars. Blackmon fully obliged. After scoring 15 points in the 1st half, Blackmon held Jonathan Merceous to 2 points in the 3rd period. Fellow Seniors Nate Grant-Dewitt and Ricky “the high-flyer” Terry countered the rough play when they used their experience to calm the Farmers. The Cardinals regained the lead and never looked back.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 1st. The Cards had some growing pains with the rough aggressive defense of the Farmers. The Farmers Jonathan Merceous was initiating the offense and controlling the boards. The Cards rebounded from the sluggish early start but Union out scored the Cardinals 14 – 13 in the first eight minutes.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 3rd. The Cardinals Tyrone Johnson collected his 1,000th point on a 4 point flagrant foul. After shaking off the hard foul, two plays later Johnson soared down the lane on a fast break feed from Sekou Harris and slammed it home to get point 1,002. The Cardinals outscored the Farmers 20 – 13 to open up a 12 point lead.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 25}
Justin scored a career high 17 points in his first year of varsity play. Justin continues to improve each game. His quickness, leaping ability, and length has help the Cards out rebound nearly every team this year. Sears shot 60% from the floor, shot 5 – 7 from the free throw line, grabbed a game high 8 rebounds, had a game high 3 rejections and only committed 1 turnover.

2) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 23}
Johnson’s steady play gave him the Star Ledger Athlete of the Week. Johnson did not miss a beat by having a team high 21 points to push him into 9th place all time for the most points scored in a career in school history. Johnson also grabbed 5 rebounds, had 3 steals and hit 9 consecutive free throws before missing his 10th attempt from the foul line late in the 4th period.

3) Union – Senior Jonathan Merceous – 6’5” {ER – 21}
Merceous continues to score his 20 + points a game. Jonathan was the game high scorer with 22 points, of which 15 came in the 1st half. Jonathan also shot 5 – 7 from the free throw line and grabbed 8 rebounds while only committing 1 turnover.

5) Union – Senior Brandom Mitchen 6’0” {ER – 13}
While the Cards were shutting down Merceous, Mitchen fully obliged with the focus off of himself. Mitchen hit 3 consecutive threes from well behind the 3 point line. Mitchen made all his points from behind the arc by shooting 4 – 6 from from deep.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Early season analysis of the top Public Schools...

The best: Cherokee Chief’s
I know I will take a lot of heat for this, but I will go with Cherokee from South Jersey. For the North and Central Jersey basketball fanatics, Cherokee comes from a very powerful athletic regional school district that also includes other power houses, Lenape and Shawnee. This area of NJ has produce Olympians and multiple professional athletes in all three major sports. It seems that Cherokee has always been competitive and like the Plainfield Cardinals, seem to just come up short. This year may be the year that the Chiefs put it all together. Cherokee just came off an overtime upset victory over South Jersey Parochial power, Camden Catholic. Cherokee is currently ranked 6th in the state and is rated by the Star Ledger as the 2nd ranked public school in NJ and the # 1 rated overall school in Central/South Jersey.

The Chiefs feature 6’9” big man Ryan McKeaney. Ryan is a monster on the boards and controls the middle on offense and defense. Talented 6’2” Junior Bryan Cooper takes a lot of pressure off his upperclassmen class mates. Cooper takes advantage of the lack of attention to score in bunches. The threat from deep is 6’0” senior Christian Jordan. Jordan shoots at a high percentage from behind the arc and can be a zone buster to teams who would rely on such a defense. If teams decide to play man to man defense, the leader and head of the team, 6’0” Senior Willis Nicholson will take you to the hole with his elusive quickness and slashing type of play.

The Hungry Challenger: Paterson Kennedy Knights
What are they feeding those boy’s in Paterson. Last year Paterson Eastside was one game from the Tournament of Champions. And they had to upset their cross town rival Paterson Kennedy to get to that point. Paterson Kennedy may lack height but speed and tenacity is their game. Kennedy’s defense maybe second to none. They are able to alleviate their height and lack of rebounding with hustle and quick feet taking numerous offensive fouls. The top public school in North Jersey Section 1 looks like a team that is ready to visit the Tournament of Champions for the 1st time.

Who will take Kennedy to the promise land? 6’3” Senior Shooting guard Shondel Stewart will. One of the top scorers in the nation, averaging over 30 points a game. Shondel is a scoring machine. Stewart is probably the most explosive scorer in NJ since Dejuan Wagner of Camden. Teams design their defense to stop him and all have failed to stop the undefeated Knights of Paterson Kennedy. 6’3” Senior Zahir Young plays the role of big man, guard, shooting guard, carry the bucket, you get the point. Zahir does everything that does not show in the box scores and then he still shows up in the box scores as the second leading scorer for the Knights.

Keeping a low profile no more: My Plainfield Red Birds...
The Cardinals are coming out of no where. With one of the top guards in the State gone and committed to Pitt (Isaiah Epps) and anything from 30 ft is my shot Anthony Baskerville now at Raritan Valley Community College, the experts expected that Tyrone Johnson could not face the talented teams in front of him by himself. The critics were right. Johnson could not face them by his self, but arguably the best group of sophomores on one team seems to have his back. The talented sophomores are doing everything that a coach could wish for. But the sophomores are not the only ones on this team. One of the best man to man defensive guards in the state 6’2” Senior Mike Price takes on the dirty job of defending teams best guards. 6’4 Senior Nate Grant-Dewitt was the actually the best shooter (percentage wise) from last years team. 6’2” Senior Ricky Terry has a parachute on his back due to his incredible leaping ability. Coach Lubreski has brought defense to the Cardinals and arguably may have the best defensive team Plainfield has ever had. Coach Lubreski does have one problem... The team is loaded and Lubreski may be charged with having too much ammunition. The Cardinals are currently ranked #5 in the state and is the top rated public school according to the Star Ledger.

Just not enough: Linden Tigers
6’4” Senior Qadeer Lewis is one of the best big men in the state under 6’5”. He has an uncanny combination of strength and speed. Lewis is also an exceptional foul shooter shooting nearly 85% from the charity stripe. Oh, he is also the teams leading rebounder. Sky riser 6’3” Senior Trell Myers had a technical foul called against him due to his elbow hanging on the rim. Myers grabs a lot of rebounds and his athleticism leads an exceptional defensive Colicchio unit. 6’0” point guard Elijah Hodge comes from a long list of talented guards to guide the Tigers. Rarely makes mistakes and is another defensive specialist. One thing about the Tigers, they will not let you score. Their aggressive hard nose defense keeps them in every game (down only 2 at the half to the Nations best team). They are just one Lampley away from going back to the Tournament of Champions.

Outside looking in:
#12 Teaneck
#13 Newark Eastside
#15 Newark University
#16 Newark Shabazz
#17 Pennsauken
#19 Passaic Tech
#20 Passaic

Look for the Newark schools - Eastside, University, and Shabazz to make a push into the top 4 publics in NJ.

Fanatic Summation of the Linden vs. Plainfield Game

Linden ranked #11 in the state came in to challenge the top ranked public school in NJ. Qadeer Lewis carried the Linden Tigers in the 1st quarter but the length of the Cardinals was too much. The Cardinals minimize all other scores for the Tigers. On a scale of 10 the Cardinals played a respectable 7.2.

Linden’s defensive game plan was impressive as it held the Cards to 8 1st period points. But the Card’s used the Tiger’s game plan and some to reverse the defensive pressure and hold Linden to 29 points in the final 3 periods.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 1st. Linden’s Qadeer Lewis singled handily nearly outscored the entire Cardinal offensive output in the 1st period. Lewis also grabbed several rebounds and was a defensive enforcer in the middle. The defensive intensity of the Tigers disrupted the Cardinals offensive flow. Linden held a 16 – 8 lead after the 1st period of play.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 3rd. The Cardinals defensive pressure was at its peak. Mike Price disrupted the guards bringing the ball up court. A critical insertion of 6’4” Senior Nathan Grant-Dewitt caused match up problems for the Tigers. This insertion changed the course of the game. Nate is known for his 3 point precision, but his 6’4” frame forced Linden’s Lewis to man up on the 3 point specialist. This took Lewis away from the basket and Tyrone fully obliged by slamming one home in the paint amongst the smaller Tigers. Plainfield outscored Linden 15 – 7 during the 3rd period to take the lead and never look back.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Linden – Senior Qadeer Lewis – 6’5” {ER – 26}*
Qadeer was the game high scorer with 24 points and game high rebounder with 9 pull downs. Lewis’s 57% shooting from the floor, 88% shooting from the foul line, and near error free basketball (1 turnover), helped the Tigers significantly in keeping the game competitive.

2) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 26}*
Justin was the second highest scorer for the Cardinals but his other efforts were impressive. Sears scored a season high 13 points, grabbed a team high 8 rebounds, and had a game high 4 rejections. Justin “Mr. Rejecter” Sears forced Linden into difficult shots through out the game. Justin had his best game this season against the 2nd highest ranked public school in the state with an error free performance (with the exception of 2 goal-tendings). Justin committed 0 turnovers in 32 minutes of play.

3) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 16}
Tyrone continues to impress the critics. Mike Quick of MSG was in attendance for the 2nd time this week. MEDIA ALERT: watch MSG High School Weekly. Tyrone’s patience showed great leadership. With the Cards down 8 points, Tyrone “Mr. Collective” Johnson continued to display patience on the offensive end. Johnson led the Cards with 17 points, dropped 3 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds. Johnson shot a season high 89% by shooting high percentage shots and not forcing the issue.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Dijon Allen-Jordan – 6’5” {ER – 13}
Dijon continues to impress. His defensive versatility, gives him the ability to defend any position. At 6’5”, Dijon can stick big men down low and with his quickness he can stick guards on the perimeter. Dijon’s clutch foul shooting (83%) and his defensive pressure on Linden’s sky walker Trell Myers pushed the Cardinals to victory.

5) Linden – Senior Trell Myers 6’3” {ER – 12}
Trell Myers sky walking act was on display. His slam dunk would probably have been a momentum shifter if he did not have his elbow stuck in the rim. He was called for the Technical foul (hanging on the rim) which calmed the Linden fans that made the trip. After having a great game against the #1 team in the Nation on Thursday (St. Patrick’s), Myers consistency showed against the Cards. Myers shot 50% from the floor, pick the pockets of the Cardinals twice, grabbed 4 rebounds, and play near error free basketball at the guard position with only 1 turnover...

Early season analysis of the top Private Schools...

The best: St. Pats
There is no one so far I have seen that can stop Irving. He is the best ball player in NJ. He can run the point, he can be the scorer, he can shoot from deep, or he can slash and spin it off the glass for 2 or worst yet, he will posterize you. His defense maybe his weak point but that’s just because I had to find something to criticize him about. He rarely gets in foul trouble, turnovers does not happen and he is the head of the Empire at the Port. I am a witness…

Although Irving is the head of the Empire, the emperor is Coach Boyle. Boyle has basketball knowledge second to none. He is a basketball junky who has to get his fix by being in the gym. This was how he was at Johnson Regional, leading them to the county championship and this is how he is as a coach. His passion for basketball is an addiction that he thrives for. Such dedication by Coach Boyle has been instilled into his players. The Celtics play the game with discipline, skill, and hustle.

Gilchrist is the man to lead St. Pat’s to the #1 ranking in the Nation. As a sophomore, he scored over 30 points against basketball factory Oak Hill Academy. With Strickland and Irving slowed down by the future NBA guards of Oak Hill, Gilchrist carried St. Pats and kept them in the game against the #2 team in the Nation. The competition he went against that day as a 15 year old, he will not see during NJSIAA play. Now 1 year older, faster, stronger, higher vertical, better handle, and now a consistent midrange stroke, the 6’7” junior is consider by many not only the best junior in the State but the best ball player in the Nation.

Plainfield locals – Chase Plummer and Derrick Gordon are the enforcers. Both play great defense and both are probably the strongest players on the team. Both take advantage of opportunities to score in bunches.

Boyle Jr. – he just gets on everybody nerves and gets teams to play outside of their game. And just when you are ready to kick him he hits a three in your face.

The Hungry Challenger: Paterson Catholic
This team has at least 15 players that are ranked in the top 50 in the state. This is no exaggeration. Their second five will beat any team ranked less than 5th in the State. Junior, Myles “Baby Face” Mack is a deadly shooter. Do not let the youthful look of Mack fool you, he sticks daggers in teams with his consistently clutch shooting.

Fuquan Edwin may be the 2nd best senior in the state. At 6’5” he has range and has excellent vertical ability. Kyle Anderson at 6’7” starts at the point, the sophomore can post smaller guards down low if you try to go man to man.

Off the bench “MAN CHILD” Trevor Clemmings (arguably the best football player in the state – heading to PITT as a defensive end), at 6’6” and 250 lbs, he enforces any threat to the Passaic County powerhouse. Wow – he is not even in the starting lineup!

Keeping a low profile: St. Anthony’s
First Coach Hurley demands perfection from his team. They may need it to defeat the previously mentioned teams. The Friars has the big men to compete with anyone. But are their guards battle tested as previous legendary St. Ant players? In fairness to the Friar’s 2 of their studs are currently out. When they arrive, only St. Pat’s and Paterson Catholic will beat them, and St. Peters giving them all they can handle.

St. Peter's Junior Sharp Shooter Myles Davis

Just not enough: St. Peters
Ronald Roberts has arguably the highest vertical in the state. At 6’7” he grabs rebounds near the top of the backboard. In the paint, he will dunk it on you. Plainfield local, Myles Davis has legendary range. He has to be defended by half court. Davis is a streaky shooter who can be lights out. Keith Lumpkin, at 6’9” 280 lbs, he is a load to get around. The top recruited junior in the state for football keeps team honest down low and opens the game up for Davis and Roberts. The Marauders have Kevin Walker and JJ Hadlick who are both high percentage 3 point specialists. If all are on they can pull the upset.

Outside looking in:
#5 Trenton Catholic
#6 Camden Catholic
#8 Seton Hall
#16 Christian Brothers
#18 St. Augustine
#20 St. Joseph (Metuchen)

Fanatic Summation of the Columbia vs. Plainfield Game

Columbia was primed for the upset against the #7 Plainfield Cardinals for 3 periods. On a scale of 10, the Cards played an 8.8. This is their highest rating since the Lakewood game in the Neptune Holiday Jubilee. The size, athletic ability, and the balance scoring held back a stubborn competitive Columbia Cougar team.

Columbia’s early hot shooting in combination with the Cards offensive woe’s helped the Cougars maintain a lead mid way through the 3rd period. With no player scoring more than 12 points, the Cardinals took advantage of the Cougars focusing on shutting down Tyrone Johnson. With balance scoring, rebounds, and defense Plainfield overcame a stubborn Cougar.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 1st. Columbia’s Jamar Chavis 3 point shooting gave the Cougar’s the early lead. The Cards dismal 13% shooting in the 1st period did not help. The Cougars held a 10 – 3 lead with less than 30 seconds remaining in the period before Ricky Terry hit a three.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 4th. The defensive pressure was intense and it held the Cougar’s to only one field goal made in the final period. A late free throw gave the Cougar’s a total of 3 points for the 4th period.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Columbia – Junior Jamar Chavis – 6’0” {ER – 22}
Jamar was the game high scorer with 16 points. In the 3rd period he nearly single handily held off the Cards comeback. Jamar shot 80% from the floor on mostly midrange jumpers and shot 67% from three point range. His game was not only jacking up shots, he also led the team in assists.

2) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 18}
Justin was one of 4 Cardinals that scored in double digits. Sears scored 11 points, grabbed a team high 6 rebounds, and a game high 3 rejections.

3) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 17}
Mike Price played his best game of the season. Price shooting was money. Mike shot 67% percent from the floor and led the team in scoring. A near complete game was displayed by Price. He garnished a game high 5 steals, dropped game high 4 assists, and soared for 3 critical rebounds in the 4th period run to seal the game.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Sekou Harris – 5’8” {ER – 13}
Sekou is developing nicely. His shot is becoming more consistent. Sekou went on a scoring binge when he dropped 9 points (3 three pointers) in less than 2 minutes. Sekou shot 60% from behind the arc and perfect from the foul line. Harris was also in the mood of giving by dropping a team high (along with Price) 4 assists.

5) Columbia – Junior Austin Little 6’2” {ER – 12}
Austin benefited from Jamar’s hot shooting. With the Cardinals playing help defense to slow down Jamar, Austin shot 60% from behind the arc and hit 50% of his pull jumpers. If Jamar was not dropping assists to Austin, Austin was dropping assists to Jamar. Austin led the team in assists along with Jamar Chavis.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. Don Bosco Game

Plainfield played a tough game against a very good Don Bosco team. On a scale of 10, the Cards played a 5.3. This ties the lowest rating of the season. The size, athletic ability, and sharp shooting of the Iron Men were a major factor for the Cards lowest rating of the season.

Don Bosco feature a junior stud in 6’5” Vaughn Gray. Good ball handling skills, very good vertical ability, and nice size causes match up nightmares. Vaughn played a Magic like all 5 positions. His strength and quickness make him very hard to defend 1 – 1.

The most disappointing period for the Cards was the 1st. Don Bosco torched the nets from deep. Don Bosco’s Gary Nova could not miss. Nova went 3 – 3 from the three to double up the score over the Cardinals in the 1st period.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 2nd. The Cardinals rebounded from the disappointing near blow out 1st period. Tyrone Johnson dropped 11 points and grabbed 3 rebounds to lead the Cardinal charge to get back in the game.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Don Bosco – Junior Vaughn Gray – 6’5” {ER – 21}
Vaughn was high scorer for the Iron Men. Vaughn scored 21 points, shot 78% from the foul line, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Vaughn has the ability to play any position at the high school level. His ball handling, speed, strength, and size make him a strong guard at the next level.

2) Don Bosco – Junior Gary Nova – 6’2” {ER – 18}
Without Nova 1st half sizzling shooting, the Cards could have won by double digits. Nova shot an accurate 71% from behind the arc. The reserve QB for the #1 high school football team in the Nation made the Cardinals play an honest no help man to man defense. Nova scored 17 points, all in the 1st half.

3) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 16}
Tyrone Johnson leadership skills have snatched victories when defeat was all but the final outcome. Johnson’s game high 26 points led the Cardinals to victory. His clutch foul shooting when the pressure was at its highest peak was clutch.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Diijon Allen-Jordan – 6’5” {ER – 15}
Diijohn was the hustle point’s winner of this game. Diijohn had the most timely put backs, rebounds, steals and block shots in the final minutes of the game. Without Diijohn hustle and determination the Cardinals would have suffered their first defeat of the season. Diijohn scored 9 points, grabbed a game high 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 rejections.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Williams 6’7” {ER – 14}
Mike’s length has disrupted opponents all season. His deceptive quickness gives him the ability to stick smaller opponents on the wing and his length gives him the ability to challenge big men in the paint. Mike’s game high 4 steals along with his game high 3 rejections kept the Cardinals in the game.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.
