December 23, 2010

Plainfield converted 14 shots below the arc to Elizabeth’s 11. Plainfield connected on 7 3-point conversions to Elizabeth’s 4.

Where did the Cardinals win this game? They were able to compensate the poor free throw shooting and a high number of turnovers with their defense. Allen “Lock em Down” Brown was missed in the Westfield game but his presence in the Elizabeth game helped the Cardinals on the defensive end. The Cardinals interior defense was exceptional. The Cards totaled 14 rejections and altered nearly every attempt in the paint. The Cards also out rebounded Minutemen 40 to 13.

The Cardinals did not take advantage of Rice’s poor foul shooting by only converting 9 of 21 free throws for a 43% clip. The point advantage from the free throw line proved to be the difference. The turnovers also hurt the Cardinals in what was a close game until the final minutes. The Cards gave Rice 7 extra possessions turning the ball over 21 times compared to Rice’s 14. What kept Plainfield in the game was rebounding as they won the battle of the boards 34 – 22.

The Time is Now

The youthful Cardinals will open up the season tomorrow in Linden. Of course Linden has a couple of transfers and a 6'8" freshman. This game should be a good one. Not many are giving the Cardinals a chance but 6'8" junior - Justin Sears, 6'5" junior - Diijon Allen-Jordan, and 6'3" - junior Jahmal Lane (3 years varsity experience) all came back from last years Sectional Championship team. The guards will all have eye's on them to see if they can erase any memory of the guards that have exited the building for brighter lights. 6'0" senior - Allen Brown will provide the leadership and 6'0" junior - Sekou Harris will provide the direction. Both guards will be key for the Cardinals success. With 1 senior starting and 1 other senior playing a reserve role, 6'1" sharp shooter Phil Spencer, the Cardinals will have to play a Lubreski style defense and hope the reserves can provide enough lift for the Cardinals to fly.

Game time tomorrow - 7:00 pm @ Linden

Teams to look out for in Group 3
Newark East Side
Mendham
Scotch Plains
Irvington
Teaneck
Neptune
Timber Creek
Camden
Woodrow Wilson
Kingsway

If the youthful Cardinals can get solid bench production, look out. If not, this will be a nail biting season.

Good Luck Cards

Stay tune for the Cardinal Fanatic Efficiency Report.

The Future...

The Future ... Part III

With 1st team all-state Tyrone Johnson transferring to possibly Montrose Christian; it would seem to look like a down year.

Although this is horrible news to the Cardinal Fanatics, the outlook is not all gloom. There are many contributors from this year’s record setting team that will be returning. Justin Sears who is going through another growing spurt, Jahmal Lane after having a solid freshman year, had the infamous sophomore jinx year, but will be one of the most experience varsity players along with Lock em Down Allen Brown. Dijon Allen-Jordan (possible starting QB for the football team) may be the best athlete on the team. At 6’5” and still growing, Dijon possesses excellent leaping ability and can stick anyone from a guard to a center. The biggest surprise may come from the once smallest guy on the floor in Sekou Harris.

The young supporting class made magnificent strides last year. Justin Sears proved to be one of the best big men in the State. Sekou Harris proved to be the missing link during the Cardinals Group 4 State Championship lost. This team has transformed under the direction of Coach Lubreski from a run and gun team during the Vasil error to a team that limits opponents possessions with discipline offense and stifling defense. The returning Cardinals are a great fit for the Lubreski system.

The Cards return 3 of the top 4 shot blockers from last years team. Justin Sears led the team in rejections while fellow sophomore Diijon Allen-Jordan and Jahmal Lane were the other 2 under class men that led the Cardinals in block shots.

The lost of Mike Price to graduation maybe a bigger hit than most people would realize. This years Cardinal Fanatic defensive MVP suffocated opponents point guards. Price was a major factor when the Cardinals went into Tiger Country and upset the defending Group 4 champs 2 years ago. Price was only a sophomore when he scored 21 points and kept Linden legend and former all-state D1 college player, Desmond Wade under wraps. Junior Allen “Lock-em Down” Brown will have to take over that role. Allen was also one of the top three-point shooters on the Cardinals (led team in percentage shooting behind the arc). Sekou Harris will also be a pest on the defensive end. Harris’s lightning speed will give opponents fits on both end of the floor. Harris was also one of the most accurate shooters from the 3 point line. Harris led the team in foul shooting percentage along with assists before his season ending injury.

Before the emergence of Justin “The Rejecter” Sears, Jahmal was one of the Cardinals leading shot blocker as a freshman. Jahmal "Let's have a Block Party" Lane had multiple shot blocks and proved be an excellent defender during his freshman campaign.

The Cardinal Fanatic will go out on limb and make an early prediction that the Cardinals will bring back...... HOLD THE PRESS!!!!

Just got news that fellow Plainfield resident and 1st team all-state guard Miles Davis of St. Peters Prep is possibly considering a petition that Johnson would reconsider the move to Montrose Christian if Davis decides to team up with him and represent the Queen City!!!!!!!

Let’s go BACK TO HISTORY....

On a cold dismal night during an Elizabeth – Plainfield football game, the Cardinal Fanatic had a sit down conversation with at the time, newly hired Coach Vasil. Vasil was ecstatic about his current team but he nearly jumped out of his seat when explained that he had 3 six graders that could play varsity right now. Those three were Hubbard school team mates (Miles and Tyrone) and Maxson stud Derrick Gordon (currently at St. Pat’s and verbally committed to Western Kentucky). Vasil new he had something special coming up the pipeline.

BACK TO THE FUTURE....
With Derrick Gordon finishing his senior season at St. Pat's, Miles Davis transferring from St. Peters to Notre Dame Prep in Massachusetts, and Tyrone transferring officially to Montrose Christian in Maryland how will the Cardinals do?

It seems improbable for the Cardinals to do well when arguably the 3 best guards in the state all live in Plainfield but will be playing else where.

All Plainfield 2009/2010 Performers - The Past

The Cardinal Fanatic did not know what to expect from the Cardinals. Loosing 4/5 of their starting lineup from the 2008 – 2009 Group 4 Section 2 champions would be considered a major rebuilding project for the 2009 – 2010 year. There was some hope with sophomore sensation Tyrone Johnson entering his junior year with 2 years varsity experience. There was still a big question mark on who would fill the shoes of Isaiah “Curly Neal” Epps, Anthony “From Beyond” Baskerville, Khalid “The Rejecter” Muhammad, and Jabril “Mr. Hops” Elliot.

The 2008 – 2009 ended on a controversial mishap which rang through the Queen City inner basketball circles for months like a horrible horror movie with a cryptic ending. The lost to Paterson East Side was devastating. Many did not believe the Card’s could repeat to win a sectional title with the majority of impact players lost to graduation but a conversation that the Cardinal Fanatic had with Coach Hunter of Maxon Middle School 3 years prior led me to believe that the Big Red Bird would surprise many for 2009 – 2010.

The Cardinal Fanatic asked Coach Hunter, after current St. Patrick star Derrick Gordon graduated from Maxon and completed his first season at the port; I guess you had to rebuild your dynasty you had with Derrick. Hunter replied, “Pleaseeeeee, although Derrick led us to 2 dominating seasons, the returning team was better!” Cardinal Fanatic replied, “Excuse me? Hunter explained, “My returning players are better than the previous 2 years as a team. I have 5 players that can dunk at the age of 13.” The beak off of the Cardinal Fanatic had to be picked up off the floor due to the astonishment of such a statement. Hunter further stated, “Many teams questioned the age of our players due to their size and maturity. These guys will help the Cardinals for years to come.”

To be continued….

1st Team All Efficiency Performance

Top Efficiency Performance of the 2009 – 2010 Season in a Plainfield Game -
1st Team All Efficiency Performance

#1 - St. Patrick – Senior Kyrie Irving – 6’3” {ER – 40}*
Kyrie put on a performance for the ages. Fans in attendance witnessed one of the best guards to ever come out of the Garden State. Kyrie dropped a game high 30 points. Kyrie shot 92% from below the arc (11 for 12), 100% from above the arc (2 for 2), garnished 5 steals, dropped off 3 assists, and 1 rejection while only committing 1 turnover.

#2 - Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 36}*
Johnson returned strong after a sub par performance against St. Pats. Johnson scored the highest efficiency rating breaking the season high rating set 2 days ago by the #1 player in the Nation, Michael Gilchrist {ER – 33}. Johnson dropped a season high 30 points and missed a double-double by 1 rebound. Johnson shot a blazing 88% from below the arc and 3 – 5 (60%) from above the arc.

#3 - Roselle Catholic– Sophomore Jameel Warney – 6’6” {ER – 36}
Warney is one of 3 Plainfield basketball studs that have earned Star Ledger Basketball Outstanding Performer of the week (others are Miles Davis of St. Peters Prep, and Tyrone Johnson). Warney’s outstanding performance also tied a season high efficiency rating (Tyrone Johnson). Warney showed why he earned that honor. Jameel scored a game high 24 points on 64% shooting and hitting 75% of his free throws. He earned a double-double by grabbing a game high 12 rebounds. Warney also had 2 steals, 2 rejections and 2 assists to take Plainfield to the brink of elimination.

#4 - St. Patrick – Junior Michael Gilchrist – 6’7” {ER – 33}*
Gilchrist showed that he is the best ball player in the nation. Gilchrist shot a perfect 9 – 9 from the floor. His quickness, leaping ability and agility is superior to most high school athletes. The most impressive thing about Mike is he is not even 90% healthy. Mike also grabbed 7 rebounds, had 3 steals, had 1 rejection, and dropped 1 assist. We should be seeing him on the NBA court in the near future.

#5 - Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 29}
Justin is continuing to come up big so far in his first state playoff experience. Justin shot 50% from the floor scoring a team high 20 points but his other contributions were clutch. Sears grabbed a game high 14 rebounds, blocked a game high tying 2 shots (both in the final period), and had a game high 5 steals. His coast to coast dunk brought the Cardinal fanatics to their feet. This is Justin’s career high efficiency rating, and it came when the Cardinals needed it most.

2nd Team All Efficiency Performance

Top Efficiency Performance of the 2009 – 2010 Season in a Plainfield Game. -
2nd Team All Efficiency Performance

#6 - Linden – Senior Qadeer Lewis – 6’5” {ER – 26}*
Qadeer was the game high scorer with 24 points and game high rebounder with 9 pull downs. Lewis’s 57% shooting from the floor, 88% shooting from the foul line, and near error free basketball (1 turnover), helped the Tigers significantly in keeping the game competitive.

#7 - St. Anthony – Senior Devon Collier – 6’9” {ER – 25}
Devon was an absentee player in the 1st half. After getting his ear chewed off by Coach Hurley, he responded like a man possess. Collier did not play the 1st period and did not grab a single rebound in the 1st half but his play in the 2nd half was near perfect. His inspired play shifts the momentum of the game for the Friars. Collier scored 13 of his 14 points in the 2nd half without missing one shot attempt and grabbed all of his 7 rebounds in the 2nd half. Devon also shot an impressive 80% from the free throw line. Devon will be playing his college ball at Oregon St next year who is coached by the brother of the 1st Lady of the United States.

#8 - St. Anthony’s – Senior Derrick Williams – 6’6” {ER – 25}
With out Derrick in this game, the Cardinals would have won by double digits. His strength was a man against boys. He created space for put backs, he boxed out for rebounds, and his uncanny leaping ability rejected multiple shot attempts. Derrick shot 56% from the floor, 80% from the free throw line, grabbed a game high 8 rebounds, had 2 assists, 2 steals, and a game high 3 rejections. Derrick will be playing his college ball at the University of Richmond next year.

#9 - Westfield – Senior Pat Sabatino – 6’8” {ER – 25}
Sabatino did his best to try to keep Westfield in the game. Pat had a team high 23 points shooting 64% from the floor, shot 83% from the foul line, grabbed a game high tying 5 rebounds, and had a game high tying 2 rejections.

#10 - St. Patrick – Senior Chase Plummer – 6’6” {ER – 23}
Chase was also perfect from the floor with his shooting. But he surprised his home town Cardinals with his outside touch hitting 2 step back 3 pointers. Chase also led the game in rebounds and steals.

#12 - Elizabeth– Junior J.R. Pringley– 6’6” {ER – 22}
J.R. Pringley single handily kept the Minutemen within striking distance. Pringley, who has family ties in the Queen City, shot 62% from below the arc, and the 6’6” junior shot 67% from the 3. Pringley had a team high 22 points and led the Minutemen in rebounds.

Chuck was simply in the zone in the second half. Oliver had 5 points at the half, but he came out in the 2nd half looking for his shot. Chucky shot 82% from the floor overall in the 2nd half. He shot 5 – 6 from below the arc and shot an eye popping 4 – 5 from well beyond the 3 point line. Charles dropped 28 points in the 2nd half of which 17 came in the final 8 minutes.

Top Efficiency Performance of the 2009 – 2010 Season in a Plainfield Game -
4th Team All Efficiency Performance

#16 - Union – Senior Jonathan Merceous – 6’5” {ER – 21}
Merceous continues to score his 20 + points a game. Jonathan was the game high scorer with 22 points, of which 15 came in the 1st half. Jonathan also shot 5 – 7 from the free throw line and grabbed 8 rebound while only committing 1 turnover.

Vaughn was high scorer for the Iron Men. Vaughn scored 21 points, shot 78% from the foul line, 4 assists, and 3 steals. Vaughn has the ability to play any position at the high school level. His ball handling, speed, strength, and size make him a strong guard at the next level.

#18 - Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 21}
Price gave a season high efficiency performance. Price continues his outstanding defensive efforts. Price has my vote for one of the top 5 defenders in the state. Price had a game high tying 4 steals (Justin Sears also with 4 steals) and a game high tying 2 rejections (Justin Sears also with 2 rejections. His rejection of a shot that was pinned near the top of the box on the back board in the 4th period culminated an outstanding 32 minutes of defense. Mike also dropped off a game high 7 assists and shot 100% below the arc to cap off an outstanding night.

#19 - East Orange – Junior Mario Moody Jr. – 6’8” {ER – 21}
No clear scouting report was out on this junior phenom. Mario is one of the most athletic big men in the state with major Division 1 ability. As Plainfield, East Orange has many players playing at other schools. How Moody went undiscovered, only the Jaguars can answer that. Moody was the reason this game was so tough for the Cardinals. Mario dropped a team high 11 points, grabbed a game high tying 11 rebounds, and had a game high 4 rejections. Moody will be a player to watch for next season.

#20 - Seton Hall Prep – Senior John Caprio – 6’5” {ER – 20}
Without Caprio the Pirates would have lost by double digits. He did all the dirty work for the Pirates and contributed significantly on the offensive end. Caprio pick the pockets of the Cardinals with his bruising defense garnishing 8 steals. Caprio shot and efficient 64% from the floor to tally 19 points.

The Cardinal Fanatic Top 10 teams in NJ – 2009-2010

A cynical & critical review where the stroke of the pen was mightier than a 3 point swish at the buzzer of the 2009 – 2010 NJ basketball season.

The Cardinal Fanatic Top 10 teams in NJ – 2009-2010

1) St. Patrick
2) Trenton Catholic
3) Camden Catholic
4) St. Anthony’s
5) Paterson Catholic
6) St. Peters
7) Cherokee
8) Plainfield
9) University
10) Shabazz & Mendham

1) St. Patrick – They have 2 future NBA players on their team whose skill level is so far and beyond any other players in the state of NJ. They crushed the TOC winner by nearly 30 points without Michael Gilchrist and played many of their role players nearly half way through that game. St. Pat’s played their last game of the season as the dominating team the Cardinal Fanatic saw in the beginning of the season (Union County Tournament victory over Plainfield) when they dominated the NYC Catholic League Championship runner up Bishop Laughlin by 45 points in a pre-season game. The NJSIAA had this information concerning the early practice for some time and hesitated with a decision that was not good for NJ basketball. Since St. Patrick was not ban for the season, they are the best team in NJ. They beat the best and are the Cardinal Fanatic best team by far.

2) Trenton Catholic – A very talented team that brought the title to Trenton. The TOC champion shocked the state with their triple overtime victory over St. Anthony’s. This victory along with their TOC victory over Camden Catholic should have given them the #1 ranking but their lop-sided defeat to St. Pat’s was the deciding blow.

3) Camden Catholic – Camden Catholic only suffered 2 defeats all season. Their first loss was to the Cardinal Fanatic top rated public school, The Cherokee Chiefs in overtime, and their second loss in the TOC finals to Trenton Catholic. With signature victories over Cherokee and St. Peters, a convincing victory over Trenton Catholic would have made a good argument for Camden Catholic earning the #1 ranking.

4) St. Anthony’s - Legendary Coach Hurley had this team at the brink of being the #1 team in the state. St. Anthony’s defeat of undefeated Paterson Catholic gave them a shot at the subjective #1 ranking but Trenton Catholic threw a monkey wrench into the pot. The possibility of a #1 ranking was erased with their only lost to a NJ team, Trenton Catholic in a dramatic triple overtime contest.

5) Paterson Catholic – The #1 ranking was theirs for the taking with St. Pat’s disqualified from the state playoffs. A top 10 national ranking and an undefeated season going in to the state playoffs made it seem that Paterson Catholic was the one to earn the title of the states best team. Their loss to St. Anthony’s may have been the most devastating loss of the season for any team in the state. Their loss to St. Ant’s and how they loss had a factor in their dropping in the rankings. It probably would have helped them with some tougher in state opponents during the season.

6) St. Peters – The experience of this team seem to give the Jersey City school a chance at the state title. After suffering only 2 defeats to two nationally ranked teams – St. Anthony’s (St. Peters should have won with a 10 point lead and 2 minutes remaining in the game) & Paterson Catholic (a dead even game until Plainfield native Miles Davis suffered a concussion late in the game). Their defeat of power house Oak Hill Academy lifted St. Peters to the pinnacle of the top team in NJ. The 2nd biggest upset of this season, a loss to Camden Catholic knocked the Jersey City school down the rankings.

7) Cherokee – The favorites to take the title of top public school did just that. Their early season overtime victory over Camden Catholic proved that this was a top ten team in NJ. Another signature victory over Plainfield put the Chiefs in position to battle for a TOC title. With their victory over Newark power house Shabazz, the Chiefs just needed to repeat what they did early in the season, beat Camden Catholic. Cherokee came up one game short from the championship round. Several early season defeats were the only thing that prevented the South Jersey power from achieving a higher ranking.

8) Plainfield – Loosing only twice during the regular season to national powers, St Anthony’s and St. Patrick, did not dampen the Cardinals season. The Cardinals defeated over a dozen teams that were ranked or at one point were ranked in the top 20 in the state. This was even more impressive considering the main core of this team were 15 year olds. The Cardinals crept up to their highest ranking in nearly 30 years, #5 in the state. That was all ruined by a wounded Celtic in the Union County Championship. The Celtics made it a point to show the MSG televised audience that they were the top team in the tri-state area. This came at the expense of the Cardinals. This defeat dropped the Cardinals in the rankings for the first time all season and their loss to Cherokee in the Group 4 finals did not help their cause.

9) University – The top basketball program for the 2009-2010 season out of the largest city in NJ had to battle day in and day out with its cross town rivals of East Side, Shabazz, Science Park, and up and coming Central to just make it out of its own town. Seton Hall Prep gave them all they could take to make it out of their own county with the Essex County Championship. This alone was very impressive from the Group 1 power that made a run to become the smallest public school to win the TOC. Their run was ended in the semi finals by eventual TOC champion Trenton Catholic.

10) Shabazz – Loaded with size, The Group 2 champions seem to be the perfect match up against the Cherokee Chiefs in the TOC Championship 1st round. The Bull Dogs gave the Chiefs all they could handle and just loss on a miss 3 at the buzzer.
Mendham – The Morris County power surprised many to win the Group 3 title. With a young team, this could be a team to watch for next season. Mendham run ended with a defeat to Newark power University in the 1st round of the TOC.

The Final Summation - Cherokee vs. Plainfield Group 4 State Championship

In a game where both teams were shooting poorly, it was just a matter of who would knock down the big shots. A family member of Cherokee’s senior Wes Tisdale explained that this game would come down to the play of Tisdale and Nate Grant-Dewitt. The Cardinal Fanatic said the game would come down to who won the rebound battle. As all season, Plainfield only defeats came when they lost the battle of the boards. Nate and Wes actually shot nearly identically from the floor but Wes grabbed a game high 12 rebounds to help give the Cherokee Chiefs the edge on the boards. This proved to be critical where the Chiefs were able to get more second shots and the majority of the case get to the foul line.

The Cardinal Fanatic picked the Chiefs to win it all back in December with either the Cardinals or Paterson Kennedy getting second fiddle. Unfortunately this proved to be true. Tyrone Johnson scored a team high 13 points to earn MVP honors for the Cardinals and Mike Price defensive efforts held the Cherokee team high scorer, Willis Nicholson, to only 1 field goal made for the entire game but it was not enough.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Cherokee – Senior Wes Tisdale – 6’4” {ER – 14}
Tisdale scored all his points when it mattered the most. Wes shot 0 – 6 in the first half but during the 2nd half crunch time shot 50 % from the floor including 2 critical 3 pointers that shifted the momentum one final time in favor of the Chiefs. Tisdale also hit 2 shots down low with nifty reverse moves to avoid the “Rejection Renegades” of sophomores Justin Sears and Diijon Allen-Jordan. But his game high 12 rebounds, which earned him a double double, proved to be what earned him the efficiency player of the game. Wes finished off the day earning the MVP of the Group 4 championship.

2) Cherokee – Senior Phil Henry – 6’8” {ER – 14}
Although, Henry was not in the starting line up, his insertion into the game after Justin Sears and Mike Williams displayed that they were going to control the paint proved to be a critical move. Phil shot perfect from the floor and foul line, grabbed 6 rebounds, had 2 steals, and 1 rejection to fortify a Chiefs victory.

3) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 13}
Sears had to deal with 13’5” of big men down low. The big men of Cherokee, 6’9” senior Ryan McKeaney and 6’8” senior Phil Henry gave sophomore Justin Sears a tough time down low. Justin was not able to score a field goal but that did not deter him from contributing in other ways to keep the Cards in the game. Justin grabbed a team high 7 rebounds (12 according to the Star Ledger & Courier News), snatched 3 steals, and rejected 3 shots.

4) Cherokee – Senior Willis Nicholson – 5’11” {ER – 12}
The muscular quick guard had his hands full with the best on the ball defender in Mike Price holding him to 1 – 11 shooting from the field. But Nicholson found other ways to defeat the top public school in the state. Nicholson scored a game high 14 points (along with Cherokee’s Christian Jordan 14 points) by knocking down 11 out of 14 free throws (79%), had a game high 4 assists, 3 steals and 4 rebounds.

5) Cherokee – Senior Ryan McKeaney – 6’9” {ER – 12}
The 6’9” center proved to be a pivotal piece of the puzzle to secure Cherokee’s first ever-state championship. Ryan secured the zone defense down low and altered multiple lay-up attempts by the Cardinals. Ryan had a game high 4 rejections, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals.

East Orange vs. Plainfield Semi Finals of the State Group Tournament

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.6. The East Orange Campus Jaguars came in this game with size and more quickness than the youthful Cardinals. Junior Mario Moody Jr. of the Jaguars is an athletic freak of nature. Speed, quickness, and vertical ability second to no one in the Public School system through out the state. For the fanatics that were not in attendance, Moody is only a less skillful prototype of a Ronald Roberts of St. Peters or Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick. But the East Orange center tried to affect the MOOD of the Cardinals center Justin Sears. With experience beyond his 2 years of basketball, the sophomore center calmly used his fundamentals to do the basics of boxing out and positioning. The battle of two of the best public school big men was a near draw but Sears came up big when needed the most to get the edge on an instant classic battle of big men. Sears clutch free throw on a one and one to tie the game in the 4th period along with a game momentum changing rejection catapulted the Cardinals to victory. Mike Price defense was surely missed during a stretch in the 3rd and 4th period (out with foul trouble) as the Jaguars outscored the Cards 19 – 4 to take the lead. The re-insertion of Price gave the Cards a boost as the Cards returned the favor by ending the game on a 15 – 3 run.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 24}
After having the stocks of Sears drop to a near collapse after the St. Patrick game, Sears and Co. rebounded miraculously to the point where the Government is looking into filing an anti-trust suit due to the monopoly that Sears has on the interior paint. Facing an ultra talented center in 6’8” Mario Moody Jr., Justin just took it as another day in the office. Justin approached this game in a business like matter by giving a double-double performance. Justin dropped 16 points while grabbing a game high tying 11 rebounds (Moody also with 11 boards). Justin also picked up a team high 3 steals and hit clutch free throws in the decisive 4th period.

2) East Orange – Junior Mario Moody Jr. – 6’8” {ER – 21}

3) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 11}
The composure of Johnson kept the Cards under control when the Jaguars took the lead in the final period. Johnson led all scorers with 18 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and picked up 2 steals. Johnson free throws in the final minute of the game sealed the victory for the Cardinals.

4) East Orange – Senior Dominique Debts – 6’6” {ER – 8}
Debts 2 handed slam in the 4th period erupted the Jaguar fans to their feet which gave the Jaguars a 2 point lead to quiet the Cardinal fanatics. Debts shot an efficient 67% from the floor to keep the Jaguars in the game.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 8}
Mike continues to make the efficiency rankings on the defensive side. Mike defensive skills are being notice by college recruiters. His absence during the 19 – 4 run by the Jaguars gave the East Orange fans something to cheer about. When Mike was on the floor, the Cardinals out scored the Jaguars 43 – 24. While running the point duties, Price only committed 1 turnover.

The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio

Hillsborough vs. Plainfield Semi Finals of the State Sectional Tournament

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.7. The Cardinals quickness and sharp shooting gave Plainfield the advantage over the Raiders of Hillsborough. The Raiders Kyle Banfield scored on multiple nifty moves, but it was not enough. Hillsborough could not get into any long stretch of offensive consistency. This may be the result of the defensive efforts of Mike Price. Nate Grant-Dewitt and Tyrone Johnson eased the deep rooted zone defensive strategy the Raiders came into the finals with. Nate and Tyrone connected for 5 from beyond the arc to loosen up the zone defense. The super sophomores of Sears, Lane, and Allen-Jordan then penetrated the new founded open lanes to open the game up and seal the victory. PLAINFIELD BACK TO BACK GROUP IV SECT II STATE CHAMPS!!!!

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 29}
Johnson continues to increase his scoring production as the Cards get further along in the NJSIAA state playoffs. Johnson scored a game high 23 points shooting 75% below the arc, 60% from beyond the arc, and 100% from the free throw line. Johnson also had 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

2) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 21}
Price gave a season high efficiency performance. Price continues his outstanding defensive efforts. Price has my vote for one of the top 5 defenders in the state. Price had a game high tying 4 steals (Justin Sears also with 4 steals) and a game high tying 2 rejections (Justin Sears also with 2 rejections). Price rejection of a shot that was pinned near the top of the box on the back board in the 4th period culminated an outstanding 32 minutes of defense. Mike also dropped off a game high 7 assists and shot 100% below the arc to cap off an outstanding "The Price is Right" night.

3) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 17}
Sears has just announced a hostile take over the interior paint industry. Justin controlled the paint by grabbing a game high 6 rebounds and rejecting a game high (along with Mike Price) 2 shots.

4) Plainfield – Senior Nate Grant-Dewitt – 6’5” {ER – 13}
Dr. Zone Buster extended his office hours in which he dissected a crack in the Raiders zone for 2 consecutive 3 point bombs. Dr. Buster showed that his area of specialty is not only from deep but Nate has expanded his practice down low by connecting 3 of 3 shots below the arc.

5) Hillsborough – Senior Kyle Banfield – 6’5” {ER – 12}
His size, 240lbs plus, fooled the Cardinals. Banfield showed very good quickness, mobility, and an array of moves to carve the Cardinal defense. Banfield shot 75% from the floor (6 for 8) to lead the Raiders in scoring.

The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio.

Ridge vs. Plainfield Semi Finals of the State Sectional Tournament

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played a 7.3. The play of Andrew “The Mad Bomber” Madlinger had a lot to do with the Cards receiving their lowest efficiency rating at the Rico Parenti Gymnasium this year. Andrew was on fire from deep and put on a Reggie Miller like performance to bring back the Red Devils from certain defeat to the edge of victory.

News alert: Sears & Roebuck has just announced a copy right infringement of the Sears & Johnson show. The two under classmen combined for 39 points, 21 rebounds, 7 steals, and 4 rejections. The game would not have been, if it was not for Dr. Zone Buster changing his office hours to down low. Nate Grant-Dewitt used the Clyde Frazier – Willis Reid pick and roll to score 3 clutch baskets down low to hold off the Hot Red Devils. Nate also grabbed 3 crucial rebounds in the final minutes of the game.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 29}

2) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 20}
Johnson filled up the stat sheet by scoring 19 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 assists (team high along with Allen Brown), and a game high tying 2 rejections.

3) Ridge – Senior Andrew Madlinger – 6’4” {ER – 17}
Who said Reggie Miller retired! Andrew Madlinger is known through out the state as one of the best 3 point shooters. He dismayed that rumor to be factual by hitting 5 out of 6 threes. His performance brought the Red Devils back from a 7 point deficit to 2 points in the matter of seconds. Andrew also grabbed a team high 7 rebounds.

4) Ridge – Junior Tom Gambino – 6’7” {ER – 17}
Tom fouling out in the 4th period proved to be the difference in the most exciting game of the year. The big man shot an efficient 60% from the floor, had 5 rebounds and did not commit a single turnover for the entire game.

5) Ridge – Senior Nick Cefalo – 6’3” {ER – 16}
The football stud showed his toughness by fighting off one of the states best on the ball defender in Plainfield’s Mike Price. Cefalo used his strength to let the Cardinals know there would be no pick pocketing going on. Cefalo shot 100% from the foul line, grabbed 5 rebounds (4 of them in the critical 4th period), and dropped a game high 5 assists all while only committing 1 turnover. Cefalo’s assist to turnover ratio was an impressive 5 to 1. Note: This was a season low turnover by any public school guard against the Cardinals.

The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio.

Columbia vs. Plainfield Quarter Finals of the State Sectional Tournament

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.9. Dominique Blackmon gave the Cardinals a much needed relief with their top two defenders in foul trouble. Dominique shot 3 for 4 from the field while snatching 3 steals to help lead the Cardinals to a 19 point victory.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 23}
Justin is coming up big so far in his first state playoff experience. Justin shot 50% from the floor on 2 for 4 shooting but his other contributions were impressive. Sears grabbed a team high 9 rebounds, blocked a game high 7 shots, picked up 4 steals and had 3 assists while committing 2 turnovers.

2) Columbia – Senior Femi Agunbiade – 6’6” {ER – 20}
Femi did his best to carry the Cougars. Femi scored a team high 9 points on 4 for 6 shooting. Femi grabbed a game high 13 rebounds and rejected a team high 3 shots.

3) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 19}
Teams are trying their best to stop Johnson from scoring but Johnson is using his other basketball skills to lead the Cards. Tyrone scored a game high 17 points on 50% shooting, dropped a game high 7 assists (15 assists so far in the state tournament), grabbed 4 steals, and snatched 3 rebounds.

4) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 15}
Mike did not let his foul trouble affect his game. His defensive tenacity has been a catalyst for the Cardinals all year. Against Columbia it was no different. Price harassed the Cougar guards all night. Price picked up 3 steals, grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, and shot 50% from the floor.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Williams – 6’7” {ER – 11}
Other than Johnson, Williams was the only other player to score in double digits. His mid range game is coming at the right time. His height gives him the ability to shoot over nearly all defenders. Williams shot 71% from the floor mostly on midrange jump shots while only committing 1 turnover, his first so far in the state tournament.

The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio.

Watchung Hills Regional vs. Plainfield round 1 of the State Tournament

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played a 9.0. Nate Grant-Dewitt led the Cardinals to a 30 point victory with his game high 15 points. Plainfield seemed to have some sluggishness early in the game but that was shaken off midway through the third period when Allen Brown and Mike Price connected on back to back 3’s.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 1st. The Cardinals came out looking a step slower than normal. Watchung Hills took an early 2 – 0 lead but that was quickly a thing of the past. The Warriors continued to play competitively to end the 1st with a 6 point deficit.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 2nd. “Dr. Zone Buster” Nate Grant-Dewitt connected on a couple of three pointers to help spear head a 26 point outburst for the Cardinals. The highlight of the period was a slam dunk by Justin Sears.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 21}
Justin scored 12 points shooting 5 for 5 from the floor. Sears played equally efficient on the defensive end also by rejecting a game high 3 shots and grabbing 2 steals. Justin controlled the glass by grabbing a game high 7 rebounds.

2) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 19}
With teams focusing their defensive efforts on slowing down Johnson, Tyrone looks to other ways to get the job done. Johnson dropped a season and game high 8 assists, had a game high 5 steals, and grabbed 4 rebounds. Johnson’s assist to turnover ratio was an impressive 4 to 1.

3) Plainfield – Senior Nate Grant-Dewitt – 6’5” {ER – 17}
Dr. Zone Buster was at it again with his soft outside touch. Nate shot 50% from beyond the three point line and shot a perfect 3 for 3 from below the arc to lead all scorers.

4) Watchung Hills – Senior Colin Heinle – 6’0” {ER – 16}
If it was not for the early foul trouble, Colin may have been able to get the Warriors closer. Colin was the team high scorer with 14 points shooting 56% from the floor while playing in a limited amount of time.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 16}
Mike Price continues to display that he is one of the best on the ball defenders in the state. Mike snatched 4 steals but on this night his offensive game was even more efficient. Price shot 80% from the floor and hit his only attempt from deep for three points.

The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio.

Union County Finals – Plainfield vs. St. Patrick

St. Patrick playing their last game of the season showed why they should be considered the #1 team in the state. Losing 3 games all season by a total of 3 points to National Powers (Findlay Prep of Las Vegas, Nevada (Gilchrist played with one leg) – St. Benedicts of Newark (Gilchrist did not play), and Oak Hill Academy of Virginia (same day discovered they were being investigated by the NJSIAA). All three losses were devastating but not as devastating as the ruling of the NJSIAA to ban the Celtics from State tournament play.

The Celtics played Plainfield like it was their last game and Kyrie “The Magnificent” Irving put on a show. His play was the efficiency performance of the year.

Plainfield did not have the horses to compete with the Mighty Celtics. The Cardinals took on the challenge but suffered their worst defeat of the year.

Looking forward the Cardinals will not face anyone as good as St. Pats for the remainder of the season. Good luck against Watchung Hills. This will be the first game for the Cardinals in defending their Sectional Championship.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) St. Patrick – Senior Kyrie Irving – 6’3” {ER – 40}*

5) St. Patrick – Junior Jarrel Lane – 6’1” {ER – 11}
On any other team, the Roselle native would be a go to player. Jarrel played the point guard position to near perfect efficiency. Lane hit his only shot attempt, a 3 from 25 feet out, collected 2 steals, and dished out a game high 4 assist (along with Derrick Gordon) while not committing a turnover, which is a rarity for a point guard. Lane completed the day with a 4 – 0 assist to turnover ratio.

The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio.

Fanatic Summation of the Roselle Catholic vs. Plainfield Union County Tournament Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.0. Roselle Catholic’s Jameel Warney carried the Lions on his back as far as he could but the relentless Cardinal hunted down the Lion until he was tired to pull out the victory. The hot shooting of Nate Grant-Dewitt helped overcome one of the best zone defensive efforts against the Cardinals this year.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 2nd. The Cardinals looked a step slower during this period. Roselle Park out rebounded, committed less turnovers, made 60% of their points from the field, shot 9 - 10 from the free throw line, and finished off the 2nd period with a 12 – 0 run.

The most impressive period for the Cardinals was the 1st. Nate Grant-Dewitt bka Dr. Zone Buster was at it again knocking down 2 three pointers in as many attempts. The scoring was balance with 6 different players putting points on the board. Plainfield finished off the 1st period going on a 17 – 4 run.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Roselle Catholic– Sophomore Jameel Warney – 6’6” {ER – 36}

2) Roselle Catholic – Senior Steve Morgan – 5’9” {ER – 16}
Morgan was in charge of getting the ball to Warney. Warney dropped a game high 4 assists but what was more astounding was the 5’9” Morgan was second in rebounds for both teams with 8 boards. His game was efficient as he hit his only shot below the arc and shot 4 – 4 from the free throw line.

3) Plainfield – Senior Nate Grant-Dewitt – 6’4” {ER – 15}
Dr. Zone Buster was on duty. Luckily for the Cardinals he waived the co-pay as Nate knocked down 4 three pointers to counter the pack it down low zone strategy of the Lions. Nate shot 50 % from below the arc and 50% from beyond the three to lead the Cardinal scoring with 14 points.

4) Plainfield – Junior Allen Brown – 6’0” {ER – 15}
Mr. Split personality and master of names, Allen Brown showed his game when it was most needed by the Cardinals. Down Town Allen Brown knocked down 50% of his three’s to assist Mr. Zone Buster (Nate and Brown combined for 6 three pointers) from deep. Allen then changed into Lock Down Brown garnishing 3 steals (the back court of Price (7 steals) and Brown totaled 10 steals). Brown also shot 100% from below the arc.

5) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 14}
The young big man of the Cardinals will not have any days off this year. Sears went against arguably one of the best big men in the County. Although Roselle Catholic’s big man was the player of the game, Justin helped the Cardinals pull out the victory with his team high 5 rebounds, and game high 3 rejections.

Fanatic Summation of the Scotch Plains – Fanwood vs. Plainfield Union County Tournament Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played a 10. The defensive minded Cardinals put together the best 4 periods of defense in one night this season. The Raiders hot shooting guards of Charles Oliver, Tim Bonacum, and Patrick Dougher were defended well. Charles scored a team high 10 points while Tim and Patrick were held scoreless on only 4 shot attempts. Nate “Zone Buster” Grant-Dewitt outside touch opened the floor up for the Cardinal big men in the lane to spark the Cardinals to victory.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 1st. After Plainfield opened the game up with a 13 – 0 run Scotch Plains – Fanwood responded to close out the 1st with a 7 – 0 run sparked by a Doran Nelson 3 pointer. Plainfield was held scoreless after the initial 13 – 0 run for remainder of the 1st period.

The most impressive period was the 2nd. The Cardinals was aggressive offensively and defensively, which produced a 19 – 2 run to start the 2nd period. Defensively they held the Raiders to only 1 field goal made during the 2nd 8-minute stretch of the game. The other 4 points were made from the free throw line. Nate Grant-Dewitt and Tyrone Johnson combined for 7 – 9 shooting during the 2nd period to open the lead up to 21 points.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game

Sharp Shooting Nate was at it again. Nate shot 75% from below the arc and 75% from beyond the arc and committed 0 turnovers. His versatility with his soft touch and down low presence will be an additional weapon needed down the tournament stretch.

3) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 12}
Sears shot 67% from the floor, which was punctuated with a high percentage 2 handed slam off a feed from Tyrone Johnson. Justin also had 2 rejections, 4 steals, and 4 rebounds.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Sekou Harris – 5’9” {ER – 10}
The speedy guard gave the Cardinal faithful a scare against Elizabeth when he went down with an injury that required a hospital visit. But the lightning quick guard showed his Lubreski toughness by shaking off his injury and playing a very efficient game. Sekou shot 75% from the free throw line, collected 4 steals, and dropped 4 assists.

5) Plainfield – Sophomore Jahmal Lane – 6’4” {ER – 10}

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. Elizabeth Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.6. Plainfield outscored Elizabeth in all 4 periods. There was a balance scoring attack that featured 3 players in double digit scoring. The defensive effort was just as balance as the Cardinals collected 18 steals, 5 rejections, and out-rebounded the Minutemen 22 – 14.

This was the second consecutive game where all 4 periods displayed a balanced effort by the Cardinals. The most disappointing period would have to be the 3rd. Although the Cardinals outscored the Minutemen 19 – 13, sophomore sharp shooter Sekou Harris left the game with an injury that required medical attention. The shooting of Harris has lifted the Cardinal’s shooting percentage from the perimeter.

The most impressive period was the 2nd. The Cardinals came out firing on all cylinders as they opened the period with an 11 – 0 run to increase their lead to 16 points. Tyrone Johnson did the picking (4 steals in the 2nd period) while sophomore Jahmal Lane did the swishing (8 points on 4 – 4 shooting). The Cardinals outscored the Minutemen 19 – 11.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. St. Joseph Prime Time Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.1. Plainfield played 4 balance quarters against the 12th ranked St. Joseph Falcon’s. The Falcon’s 6’5” sophomore, Quenton DeCosey, posed a problem for the Cardinals due to his flexibility to play the perimeter and down low. The Cardinals countered that with a sophomore of their own, 6’7” Justin Sears, who forced the Falcons to look else where to score.

This was a balance effort against one of the top teams in the state. If there was a most disappointing period for the Cardinals, it was the 4th. The Cardinals gave up the most points in a single period during the final 8 minutes. The Falcons shot their highest percentage from the field during this stretch.

The most impressive period was the 3rd. The Cardinals was aggressive defensively and controlled the boards during this stretch. Justin Sears rejected 2 shots, grabbed 4 rebounds, and collected a steal to catalyze the Cardinals defensive efforts, which held the Falcons to single digit scoring during the 3rd period.

Justin’s versatile defense was a major factor in the Cardinal’s victory. Sears grabbed a team high 7 rebounds, rejected a game high 7 shots, dished out 3 assists, and collected 2 steals. His great defense on the perimeter showed the versatility of Sears.

3) St. Joseph – Junior Robert Ashamole – 6’5” {ER – 15}
If Robert was not in foul trouble, this game may have been closer. In limited time, Robert grabbed a team high 7 rebounds, shot 50% from the floor, and did not commit a single turnover.

Andrew had a team high 13 points, 3 steals and shot 56% from the floor.

Fanatic Summation of the Westfield vs. Plainfield Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.4. This rating would have been higher if it was not for the play of Westfield’s Pat Sabatino. His play down low kept the Cardinal big men on their toes on the defensive end. The Cardinal’s hot shooting from deep (71% from behind the arc) and their defensive intensity of the sharp shooting guards of the Blue Devil’s offset the outstanding play of Sabatino.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 3rd. Plainfield looked to slow down the pace with a commanding lead but Westfield took a slight advantage with the play of Pat Sabatino. Pat dropped 9 of 11 Westfield’s third period points. The Cardinals seemed more deliberate and turned the ball over more frequently during this segment of the game. Westfield outscored the Cardinals in the 3rd period 11 – 10.

The most impressive period was the 2nd. The Cardinals exploded for a season high in point production in one period. The Cardinals outside shooting confidence grew with each make. Sekou Harris, Tyrone Johnson, and Mike Price combined for 5 for 5 shooting from behind the arc to spark a 29 point production during the 2nd period.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 30}
Johnson lit up the stat sheet. Johnson had a game high 24 points, a game high tying 2 rejections, 3 rebounds, and 3 steals. Johnson facing a box and one hit 83% of his shots below the arc, 75% from beyond the arc, and 83% from the foul line.

2) Westfield – Senior Pat Sabatino – 6’8” {ER – 25}
Sabatino did his best to try to keep Westfield in the game. Pat had a team high 23 points shooting 64% from the floor, shot 83% from the foul line, grabbed a game high tying 5 rebounds, and had a game high tying 2 rejections.

3) Westfield – Senior Ryan Hess – 6’3” {ER – 18}
Ryan Hess forced Coach Lubreski to call an early time out. Hess penetrated at will to score the Blue Devil’s first 6 points. Ryan shot 5 for 6 from the floor and was perfect (5 for 5) from the foul line.

4) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price – 6’2” {ER – 17}
If the season ended today, Price would get my vote for the Cardinals as the defensive player of the year. Price had a game high 5 steals, a game high 6 assists, and was perfect from the 3 point line.

5) Westfield – Senior Hugo Nolasco 6’2” {ER – 16}
Hugo had the responsibility of being the one in the box to stick the hot Johnson. Hugo did not let that affect his overall game. Hugo shot 100% from below the arc, 67 % from above the arc, and garnished 3 of Westfield’s total 6 steals.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. Linden Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played a 9.0. This is a very high rating considering the Cards were playing the second highest ranked public school in the state. This game was competitive for the first 8 minutes. The Cards used a 25 – 4 run to open up an 18 point lead. The Tigers of Linden reduced the lead to 11 but the Cardinals held them at that point for the remainder of the game.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 1st. The Cardinal’s focused on shutting down Qadeer Lewis. Lewis dropped over 24 points and missed a double-double by one rebound in the previous meeting. The Coach Lubreski defense did its job well on Lewis holding him to 17% (1 – 6) shooting from the floor in the opening period. Linden responded to the Plainfield strategy with the hot shooting of Elijah Hodge and Jeffrey Knight who both combined for 3 – 3 shooting from behind the arc. The Tiger combo of Hodge and Knight helped Linden to outscore Plainfield in the opening period 13 -10.

The most impressive period was the 2nd. The insertions of “Mr. Zone Buster” Nate Grant-Dewitt and Sekou “Bolt” Harris sparked Plainfield to one of their most impressive scoring runs this year. Nate and Sekou nailed three 3 point attempts from deep in as many tries. Nate also finished a penetrating dish from Tyrone Johnson in the midst of the 3 point explosion the Cardinals displayed in the Tiger Den. The Coach Lubreski defensive strategy was nearly perfect. The multiple defensive sets not only shut down the Tiger’s offensively, but Linden could only get off 5 shot attempts for the entire 2nd period. The only points coming off a Qadeer Lewis assist to Armani Scipio for a lay-up. The Cardinals out scored the Tigers during the 2nd period 17 – 2.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 16}
Johnson had battle scars all over his arms from the no call physical play. The football experience paid off for Johnson as he led another balance scoring effort with 13 points. Johnson also had 4 rebounds and a game high 6 steals.

2) Linden – Senior Trell Meyers – 6’3” {ER – 15}
The Cardinals were able to ground the high flying Meyers but Trell did his best to fight off the feisty Cardinals. Meyer’s was the most efficient Tiger on this day with his 60% shooting from the floor, his team high 6 rebounds and team high 4 steals.

3) Plainfield – Sophomore Diijon Allen-Jordan – 6’5” {ER – 9}
If Diijon had finished off his 2-handed dunk attempt in the paint, the Cardinal Fanatic section was going to storm the court! Diijon has shown his competitive spirit in every game this season and believes that a Dunk is worth more than 2 points. Diijon dropped 9 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, a steal, an assist, and a rejection to lead a balance effort by the Cardinals.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Sekou Harris – 5’9” {ER – 9}
The lightning quick Harris escaped any trap attempts by the aggressive Tigers. Harris looks like he will be the next in line for the "Mr. Zone Buster" title. Harris shot 100% from behind the arc. His Curly Neal basketball handling ability helped the Cardinals defeat the top public school defensive team in the state.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Price 6’2” {ER – 9}
Mike “the” Price “is right” has been “Money” with his defensive skills. Price seems like he will have a future in law enforcement because his long arm of the law rejected multiple shots, garnished multiple steals, grabbed multiple rebounds and disrupted multiple attempts by Linden to get into their offensive sets. Price should be a candidate for first team defense before the season is done.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. St. Anthony’s Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played a 3.8. Plainfield played a great game defensively for the first 21 minutes of the game. The youthful Cardinals mixed up their defensive sets to frustrate the cold shooting Friars of St. Anthony’s. The Cardinals, to the surprise of many, was controlling the glass by out rebounding the Friars 17 – 10 for the first 21 minutes of the game. Coach Bob Hurley is legendary for a reason. He inspired his team to pick up the defensive intensity and attack the glass on every loose ball. St. Anthony’s dominated the last 11 minutes of the contest. The Friars responded by grabbing more boards than the Cardinals down the stretch 15 – 2 and out scoring Plainfield 32 - 11.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 4th. With the wheels coming off at the tail end of the 3rd period, the Cardinals never regrouped going into the final 8 minute stretch. In fairness to the Cardinals, St. Anthony ensured that the Cards would not regroup. The 6’6 250 lb Derrick Williams used his brute strength to out muscle the Cardinals down low. The 6’9” Devon Collier used his height to intimidate or reject any shot attempt in the paint. There were always 2 St. Anthony defenders with in arms length of Tyrone Johnson. With the Friar’s harassing physical defense flexing their muscle, St. Anthony pulls the game out of reach during this period.

The most impressive period was the 2nd. With sophomore sensations Diijon Allen-Jordan and Justin Sears controlling the paint with slam dunks and grabbing every loose ball, the Cardinals shook the confidence of the more experience Friars. The multiple defense sets kept the Friars off balance limiting them to only 2 field goals made during the 2nd period stretch. The Cards dominated the paint over St Ants by grabbing 7 rebounds compared to the Friar’s 2. This effort helped the Cardinals overcome a 7 point deficit and take a 2 point lead going into the half.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) St. Anthony’s – Senior Derrick Williams – 6’6” {ER – 25}

2) St. Anthony – Senior Devon Collier – 6’9” {ER – 25}

3) St. Anthony’s – Senior Elijah Carter – 6’2” {ER – 15}
Carter may be the most improve guard in the state this year. The Paterson native led all scorers with 17 points. His 3 point shooting opened the middle up for the Friar’s big men. Elijah made 3 shots from behind the arc and shot 67% below the arc. Elijah will be playing his college ball at St. Bonaventure next year.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 11}
Will some one please give this kid a day off! The sophomore has played against some of the best big men not only in the county or state, but the nation in his 1st year of varsity ball day in and day out. His team high 6 rebounds helped the Cardinals out play the Friars in the 1st half.

5) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson 6’3” {ER – 9}
Johnson faced a tough challenge with the Friars but was still able to help the Cardinals go up by 5 points past the midway point in the 3rd period. Johnson was the leading scorer for the Cardinals with his 13 points.

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

Quick Summary of the Newark National Invitational

The Cardinal Fanatic and crew went to visit the Newark National Invitational at the Prudential Center (The ROC) in Newark, NJ. Plainfield was well represented although the Cardinals were not playing. Plainfield natives that participated were Junior Miles Davis of St. Peter’s Prep, Junior Derrick Gordon, and Senior Chase Plummer of #1 St. Patrick.

Miles played a great game in defeat to New York City power Christ the King. Miles earned MVP honors for St. Peters.

Derrick Gordon and Chase Plummer played in an exciting game against nationally rated White House Station of Memphis, Tennessee. Derrick contributed with his defense and fast break buckets while Chase continues to show at 6’6” he has range from deep. Chase also was one of the top re-bounders during this battle of National powers.

White House Station has arguably the best guard in the nation in Joe Jackson. Jackson was simply magnificent. Joe has multiple skills and talent. His speed is blazing, reminding you of an Allen Iverson prototype. His shooting is on point and his court vision is outstanding. With Duke bound Kyrie Irving and Memphis bound Joe Jackson facing off, the crowd was hoping that both would match up with each other. Instead both coaches decided to have other guards stick 2 of the best guards in the country. Kyrie was at it again with his impeccable ball handling skills. On one play Irving drove hard stepped back with a double behind the back dribble and nailed the 3 from 25 feet to excite the crowd at the ROC. Joe Jackson would not be out done. His speed combine with his “Iverson” cross over moves left St. Pat’s defenders re-taping their ankles. The second best play of the game came with White House Station down 3 with less than 10 seconds remaining. The lightning quick Jackson went the length of the court in an incredible 1.5 seconds and pulled up from behind the arc to hit nothing but net to tie the game. After an inadvertent time out call by St. Pats with 3.6 seconds, St. Pats set up their offense for the play of the game. Know one new which poison the Celtics were going to choose (Irving or Gilchrist). Irving was denied the in bound pass, Boyle received the inbound pass, Boyle lobs a perfect pass to Gilchrist in the paint, Gilchrist goes up strong, gets fouled and the ball bounces on the rim and falls with less than 2 seconds remaining. With St. Pat’s in the lead by 2, Gilchrist misses the free throw and the clock runs out for the Celtic victory.

The game the Cardinal Fanatic wanted to see is our opponent for tomorrow nights battle at the Holland Tunnel, our next opponent St. Anthony’s vs. DeMatha (Maryland). DeMatha came in with a previous National ranking as high as 5th in the Nation. After watching this game, St. Anthony will be a handful for the Cardinals of Plainfield. The Friars pulled out a come from behind victory over DeMatha. Derrick Williams of St. Anthony’s will be a problem for the Cardinal’s. His 6’6” 260 lb frame will cause havoc against the youthful boys of Plainfield. Williams, a resident of Staten Island, was previously an outstanding football player in New York. No one will argue with that after taking one look at his huge biceps. The only other player that would match up with Derrick in NJ is 6’6” 255 lb Pitt bound (for football) Trevor Clemmings of Paterson Catholic. Now that’s a match-up I would pay to see!
Although Derrick is the force in the middle for the Friars, Oregon St. bound Devon Collier, resident of the Bronx, will use his 6’8” frame to control the boards. 6’1” senior guard Elijah Carter is probably one of the most improve players in the state. He has shown consistency from 3 point land and has been a catalyst for come behind victories over in town rival St. Peters and DeMatha.

Lucious Jones, a 6’5” junior with an impressive outside touch, has the versatility to play down low or out on the perimeter.

5’7” senior point guard D’Marcus Owens runs the offense to a tee according to the instructions given from living legend Coach Bob Hurley.

Predictions:
If the Card’s can win the battle of the glass, look for the upset.

Fanatic Summation of the Plainfield vs. Scotch Plains – Fanwood Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.1. The 2nd half hot shooting of the Raiders junior guard, Charles “Chuck” Oliver, reduced a once 20 point lead to single digits. Clutch foul shooting down the stretch by the Cardinals Allen Brown and Justin Sears held off the Raiders.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 4th. Scotch Plains – Fanwood 6’2” guard Charles Oliver was in the zone. Chucky connected for 17 points in the final 8 minutes of the game to reduce the once large Plainfield lead to single digits.

The most impressive period was the 1st. The Cardinals was aggressive offensively and it produced a 12 – 0 run to start the game. The Cardinals took the lead from the tip and never relinquished it again. Down Town Allen Brown connected for 2 three pointers to spark the Cardinals early run.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) SPF – Junior Charles Oliver – 6’2” {ER – 21}

2) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 20}
Johnson led a balance scoring team effort. Johnson scored 16 points, shooting 60% from below the arc. Tyrone did what ever it took to win this game by filling up the stat sheet. Johnson grabbed 6 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 rejection, and a game high 5 assists.

3) SPF – Junior Matt Jegede – 6’5” {ER – 19}
Matt used his quickness to out rebound the taller Cardinals. Matt had a game high 11 rebounds and missed a double-double by 1 point. Matt shot 75% from the charity line and had a game high 3 steals.

4) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 17}
Justin shot 80% from the floor. But his foul shooting in the 4th period was clutch. Sears connected 3 – 4 foul shots to help seal the victory.

5) Plainfield – Junior Allen Brown – 6’0” {ER – 13}
Although Charles Oliver was the high scorer of the game, Down Town Brown was perfect from behind the arc, perfect below the arc, and shot 80% from the foul line. His only miss was 1 foul shot attempt. Brown also came up clutch by nailing 3 – 4 free throws in the final minutes to help seal the game for the Cardinals.

The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio.

Fanatic Summation of the Elizabeth vs. Plainfield Game

On a scale of 10, the Cardinals played an 8.5. Elizabeth kept the game interesting in the first half with the hot shooting of J.R. Pringley. Plainfield adjusted well in the 2nd half creating multiple turnovers with their pressure defense. A combination of Tyrone Johnson hot shooting and the Cardinals dominating the boards, Plainfield was able to pull away for the victory.

The most disappointing period for the Cardinals was the 1st. Elizabeth’s 6’6” junior, J.R. Pringley took advantage of the Cardinal's lethargic start. Pringley dropped Elizabeth’s first 7 points to give the Minutemen their only lead of the game 7 – 6 midway through the 1st period.

The best period was the 3rd. The Cardinals swarming defense created multiple turnovers. The defensive intensity limited the number of touches for the hot shooting Pringley. The Cardinals were able to hold the Minutemen to 7 third period points. The hot shooting Johnson connected on 4 – 4 shooting including a three pointer. The twin towers of Mike Williams and Justin Sears created havoc with their length grabbing rebounds, collecting steals and starting fast breaks off of turnovers for easy transitional buckets which led to 20 points scored in the 3rd period.

The Plainfield Fanatic Efficient 5 for the game
1) Plainfield – Junior Tyrone Johnson – 6’3” {ER – 36}*
Johnson returned strong after a sub par performance against St. Pats. Johnson scored the highest efficiency rating breaking the season high rating set 2 days ago by the #1 player in the Nation, Michael Gilchrist {ER – 33}. Johnson dropped a season high 30 points and missed a double-double by 1 rebound. Johnson shot a blazing 88% from below the arc and 3 – 5 (60%) from above the arc.

2) Plainfield – Sophomore Justin Sears – 6’7” {ER – 23}
Justin played above the rim against the Minutemen. For the first game this season, Justin did not have a rejection. But Justin made up for that by giving a double-double performance. Sears grabbed a game high 10 rebounds, scored 12 points, had a game high 3 steals and tied (Sekou Harris) for game high in assists. Justin excited the front row Cardinal Fanatics with a full court drive for a slam.

3) Elizabeth– Junior J.R. Pringley– 6’6” {ER – 22}
J.R. Pringley single handily kept the Minutemen within striking distance. Pringley, who has family ties in the Queen City, shot 62% from below the arc, and the 6’6” junior shot 67% from the 3. Pringley had a team high 22 points and led the Minutemen in rebounds.

4) Elizabeth – Senior Jihad Wright – 6’5” {ER – 9}
Jihad bruising defense limited the damage in the paint against the twin towers of Plainfield. With Pringley assisting the guards, Jihad was the only interior presence on the offensive end. Wright was the second highest scorer for the Minutemen. Wright was perfect from the foul line and shot 50% from the floor.

5) Plainfield – Senior Mike Williams 6’7” {ER – 8}
William’s height gives him the ability to shoot over most opponents. His midrange game is getting noticed. He picked up the slack on the defensive end to lead the game in rejections. William’s also shot perfect from the free throw line

The efficient rating was based on shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and turnovers.

*Breaks St. Patrick’s Michael Gilchrist season high efficiency rating of 33.
