National Anthem at Rahway H.S.
Plainfield scored 23 field goals below the arc (on 64% shooting below the arc) while Rahway scored 16. This gave Plainfield a 14 point advantage. Plainfield and Rahway both scored 2 3-pointers which kept the difference in points at 14. Plainfield was able to expand the total difference in the game of 18 points by connecting on 14 free throws while Rahway connected on 10.
Where did the Cardinals win this game? Lieutenant Lubreski is a battlefield technician that morphs his battalion to the task in hand. Lubreski defensive sets confused Rahway after every time out and the Chiefs could never get any long stretch of an offensive momentum. The Cards seem to have switch up their normal deliberate strategy and went to a more up tempo. Believe it or not the Cards out hustled and out ran Rahway, who uses the same strategy to make them the 3rd hottest team in the county behind the #1 team in the nation, St. Patrick and the #1 public school team in the state, Linden. Other factors that help the Cardinals win was the advantage in the interior paint. The Cards grabbed 37 rebounds to Rahway’s 19. The “BLOCK PARTY CREW” continued their partying ways by rejecting 7 shots which were led by Dii’Jon Allen-Jordan 3 rejections. Another plus was the play of the reserves. Delano Mullings hit a back breaking 3 which crushed any come back hopes for the Chiefs. The rugged enforcer, Chad Lewis used his 6’4” 215 lb frame to grab 5 rebounds when the key starters were in foul trouble. Vaughn Anderson defensive effort and up tempo play provided an added spark to wear down the Chiefs. Jahmal Lane came off the bench to give the Cards another offensive option which was a major plus.
Cardinal Fanatic Efficient 5
1) Plainfield – Junior Justin Sears 6’8” {ER-26}
Justin contributions for the Cardinals to win always seem to be ordinary. But at the end of the day when his statistical contributions are tallied up, it shows something more than ordinary. Sears scored a game high tying 14 points (Rahway’s Hakeem Kornegay also with 14 points) on 56% shooting from the floor. Sears gained another double-double effort by grabbing 11 rebounds. Sears versatility at 6’8” was shown by him dropping a game high 5 assists. His effort is not just offensive. On the defensive side of the ball Justin picked up 2 steals and rejected 2 shots.
2) Plainfield – Sophomore Denzel Christian 6’6” {ER-19}
The 6’6” sophomore scored his highest efficiency rating of his varsity career in a playoff game. Denzel scored 9 points on 100% shooting from the floor. Denzel also grabbed 6 rebounds, 1 steal, and you guessed it – 2 rejections. Denzel has also improved on keeping control of the ball as he committed only 1 turnover for the game.
3) Plainfield – Junior Jahmal Lane 6’3” {ER-17}
Lane left his ego at the door and responded in a big way as he earned Cardinal Fanatic reserve player of the game. Lane responded scoring 12 points on perfect shooting (5 – 5) from below the arc. Lane also grabbed 5 rebounds and dropped 2 assists. His defensive effort does not show up on the stat line but many of the 21 turnovers by Rahway were due to Lane’s intensity on the defensive end.
4) Rahway – Junior JaQuan Mathews 6’0” {ER-12}
While the Cardinals focus their defensive efforts on Hakeem and Myron, JaQuan took advantage of open looks. JaQuan scored 9 points on 100% shooting below the arc.
5) Plainfield – Junior Sekou Harris 6’0” {ER-11}
Sekou “Buzzer Beater” Harris continues to mystify with his silky buzzer beaters. Recruiting sources have noted his proficiency of connecting on big shots. Sekou tallied 13 points which included an 80% shooting effort from the foul line. Sekou also grabbed 3 rebounds, dropped 3 assists, and picked up a steal.
The efficiency rating is base on points scored, shooting accuracy, foul shooting accuracy, rebounds, assists, steals, defensive intensity, and assist – turnover ratio.
